wii channels faq

What are Wii Channels?

Wii Channels is basically the menu that pops up when you start up your Wii. Through these "Channels" you can view all of your games and other content you have installed onto your Wii. By downloading new software, you get more Wii Channels, all which you can select from the main menu. By pointing at your "channels" and clicking them you start them up.

How many Channels can I have at once?

It is confirmed that up to 48 Wii Channels can be on your Wii at once.

What are some kinds of Channels I can expect?

Disc Channel The Disc Channel is the where you start up your Wii or Gamecube games.

Photo Channel This channel lets you show the pictures you have stored on your SD memory card on the T.V. Screen. You can also manipulate your pictures in ways like, zooming in or out, creating slideshows, mosaics, or even puzzles. Using your Wii-Mote you can draw, add stamps, or copy and paste. On top of that you can change your photos by brightening them, inverting the colors, or even adding MP3's to the slide shows. When you're done, you can attach your photos to your Wii Message Board so your family can see your creation.

Internet Channel The Interent Channel, as the name implys, allows you to browse the internet. It even supports flash. Normally it costs Wii Points to buy the Opera browser, but download before June of '07 is free.

Weather Channel By selecting the Weather Channel it gives you access to daily weather (in your region) and a week forecast. It also gives a feature similar to Google Earth, where you can rotate it to see different areas. The WiiConnect24 automatically updates your weather, so its always accurate. You'll need a WiFi connection for this one.

News Channel You get the latest news with this channel, so you'll need WiFi for this one too. It's said that it will have "functions indicative of a game machine."

Mii Channel On this channel you create your very own "Buddy Icon" or avatar, which is called a Mii. Your Mii will show up in certain games like Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Motor Sports (rumor), ect, and can be stored in your Wii-Mote to bring over to your friends house or whatever.

Virtual Console Channel On this channel you can buy oldschool games from systems such as, NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and TurboGraphx-16. The games will most likely be stored on the built in 512 MB Flash Memory.

Wii Message Board The Wii Message board is a message board on your Wii (I know, you're shocked.). Using your Message Board you can exchange messages with your family members or whoever you share your Wii with. As mentioned earlier, you can post images in edition to text. Nintendo describes it as something like posting a note on your refrigorator. Using WiFi, you can even send messages to your friends Wii or cellphone.

Wii Shop Channel This channel lets you buy or redeem Wii Points to buy Virtual Console games. Specualtion is that you may even be able to buy game upgrades here eventually.

What are the confirmed Virtual Console Games?

Will you be able to play MP3's on your Wii?
A: Yes you can but only if you have them saved to a SD card.

How much will the VC games cost?
It is 1 cent per Wii Point. So for $20 you get 2000 Wii Points, ect. NES games start at 500 points or $5; SNES start at 800 points or $8; and N64 start at 1,000 points or $10. Pricing structures for Genesis, TurboGrafx-16 and MSX (No games have been confirmed yet.) games have not yet been made available, but they are likely to be similar.

Q: Do you need you have an HDTV. to play the Wii and use the Wii channels?
No you don’t, an HDTV will have no direct effects on the Wii.

What is a Classic Controller?
A: It’s a controller used to play VC games. It has two anolgauge sticks for N64 Games and the traditional D-Pad and Buttons for N64 Games.

Can you use a Gamecube controller to play Wii games?
It has been hinted by several Nintendo exutives that this might be possible, still there is nothing confirmed.

As far as the controllers go, with SSBB you'll need to use the Gamecube contoller, so i'm pretty sure some games will have the option.
