According to a new report from American Technology Research's PJ McNealy sent to investors late yesterday, his survey of U.S. retailers has revealed that many retailers had PlayStation 3 consoles in stock, whereas none that he could find currently had Nintendo's Wii for sale.
McNealy's research note, as reported on by Reuters, reveals: "Our channel checks yesterday of 52 retail stores, from boutiques to big-box retailers, showed that 28 of the 52 stores had PS3 consoles in stock, while none had Wii consoles in stock."
However, the ATR analyst went on to note that most stores only had a handful of PlayStation 3 units for sale, but with one major retailer having more than 60 machines available - suggesting that it may not be symptomatic of lower demand for the PS3.
Nonetheless, Sony's Dave Karraker was put in the position of having to defend the PS3's demand to Reuters, commenting to them: " It isn't because demand has weakened, it is because we have kept the supply pipeline moving."
As for empirical sales data for PlayStation 3 and Wii, the current North American statistics are the NPD charts for December, which revealed that the severely supply-constricted PlayStation 3 was found to have sold through 490,700 units for the period, with 687,300 units sold since its launch in November.
However, the Wii had sold 604,200 units for the month, putting its total North American number sold at 1.1 million units. Thus far, it's unclear whether the PS3 bottleneck has cleared, flooding more machines into the market than can be swiftly picked up by consumers, or whether the PS3 is simply less desired - a situation which will only be canonically explained by the January NPD results in early February.
However, with Karraker indicating that 100,000 units per week are being flown in to North American stores, and Nintendo keeping quiet on exact shipping amounts on a week-by-week basis, further channel checks, combined with NPD data, should provide a much clearer picture early next month.

Sony spokesman Dave Karraker said the company is airlifting more than 100,000 systems into the United States every week, which is why units can be found at retail.
"It isn't because demand has weakened, it is because we have kept the supply pipeline moving," Karraker said.
So Sony is airlifting a 100,000 a week to US. How is Nintendo shipping??

so it looks like they will all have WIIs on the 21st, but as for the times, im personally camping out, it may be cold in MN with leather seats too but at least that will keep the food in the truck cold heh. I think that most people will actually be there a few hours before opening so your best bet is to get there and wait it out. Some places may be cold but it doesnt look like target is handing out tickets. so park in the front and wait till u see a few people like up. and BB if people are planning to get up early for target they will prob be there at BB that early too. and CC so with this info that they are having the sales i wish ya all good luck

Haha, they probably want to ship and sell as many PS3's as they can before Wii supply catches up. PS3 does have great graphics and I tried my hand on it in the store but couldn't try Wii because the store guy said that they don't have any spare batteries for the Wii remote of the demo unit. I guess I will have to wait until I find one to buy for myself...

I was about to go downstairs, but the phone was next to me so i decided i'd call Toys R Us. i guess something was telling me i'd get lucky.he said he had one left. well, the guy said he'd hold me one. I couldn't believe it! 6:15 at night! I raced down there (little over half hour away) with only a quarter of a tank of gas left in my 78 camaro, which is hardly any! i really didn't think i'd even make it there. also, i've never been down there as i'm only 16, and have only driven for a little bit, but i managed to find my way. As soon as i got in there, the kid who i talked to on the phone said, are you cj (which i my name)? i said yes. He said "i've got to talk to you". I hardly listened because i knew there was something wrong, but he said that the manager without telling anyone gave it to someone else. I was pretty damn pissed, but he soon told me that they would reserve one for me on the next shipment. he took down my name and number and said that i would get the first one they got in. He said they should get some more actually this week.
Anyway, they had about 40 nunchuks, remotes, and classics, so i got one of each. If anyone is near, it was the Airport Square Toys R us in North Wales PA.
So, i'm not too disappointed, atleast i know i'm getting one. He said he guaranteed them by next wednesday if not this week. Now i don't have to camp out!
P.S. I think God was somewhat with me. I managed to drive half an hour away there AND back with a quarter of a tank of gas in that car. sweet. i just spent 100 bucks on controllers and gas.
EDITED TO MAKE IT READABLE

I stopped at the local TRU around 7pm. The guy said they had a shipment of 15 around 10:30am but they were gone in a couple of hours. He said to try next Tuesday or Wednesday. I wonder how the sale of 21st will affect the supply and demand from next week on. I have seen plenty of Wii remotes and Nunchuks in local stores (already got myself a pair).

Well
Well, tried the above link. Says my target and BB are getting them in on the 21st. I think I'm camping. It's like hunting, wait for your game to come around and pounce...or shoot..or whatever. In this case it's drop kick whoever is infront of me and buy one.
Btw- I live in Lafayette Louisiana

Is arriving at the store 2 hours before opening good enough? I work the overnight shift and I get off work at 6am, so that's the only time I can get to go. Is there a chance of me getting a Wii system or am I screwed? I really want to get one at Target. BTW I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
