here's the deal. you wanna get a wii, here's what you do. call your local department stores and any other store in your area that would sell a Wii. Ask them when their next shipment will be, and show up at opening hours to try and score one. Usually they're only going to get like 5-10 units per shipment (at least that's been my experience) so being there as the doors open is a MUST.
If they have more customers there to buy a wii than they have systems for, they'll probably hold a raffle on the spot to see who gets the ability to purchase. Otherwise, you've got yourself a Wii!
That's how I got my Wii. I called K-Mart on a Saturday night asking when they're getting them in because I saw their weekend ad. They said they'd be in that Saturday night and put on the shelves that night to be sold Sunday morning. So there I was right at the door as they opened and I snagged one! First try!

man. was at target before they opened. few people outside, but half didn't even go to electronics. i was number 11 and they had 10..
think i'm done with wii, utterly ridiculous that a console can't be found easy in march that was released in nov. maybe i'll wait a year and get one used or something. thing is a joke.

Yeah, this wii thing is getting seriously crazy. I could go right now and get a ps3, no problem. I might have to go to a few stores in my area, but I could find one. I know, they are more expensive and everything. I don't want a ps3 vs. wii debate, because I love nintendo and wiis with all my heart. But seriously, nintendo hasn't planned well. Ugh. And today I missed a shipment at target, i forgot to call. I have been called for 5 days straight, the day i forget, they get a shipment.
ARGH
ARGH
AND ANOTHER
ARGH.
hmph.

Here's a pretty good piece of info from my local Toys R Us. Nintendo ships more product to Toys R Us than any other store. Everyone is suggesting Target; I'm going to suggest Toys R Us. Yesterday, I made it to Target in time to see the last Wii sell @ 9:30 (about 30 minutes after the doors open). Asked how many they had, they started with 16. They had no remotes, no nunchucks, no Wii Play. So I go get breakfast hang out a bit and head to Toys R Us. Doors open at 11:00. Manager walks out and sees a short line. Says good morning, we have 20 Wiis available with a limit of 1 per customer, here is a pull tag. Please take it to the gaming counter and they will take care of you. Not do they just have 4 more systems; they have about 20 - 30 remotes and nunchucks. About 3-5 copies of Wii play and every other game you could want.
In summary... Wake up Sunday morning (maybe check Saturday night), use this link:
http://www2.toysrus.com/our/tru/prom/
If you see a Wii system advertised, sleep in a bit and let the other guy wait at Target. Get to Toys R US 1.5 hours later and get everything you need to start playing. Oh, and if you want to check Toys R Us during the week... Call between 9:30 - 10:00 am. They'll answer any and all questions that you may have AND provide friendlier customer service.
Is this a Nintendo issue... I'm thinking no. Yeah, they may have underestimated the demand a little bit. But, it's not that Sony or Microsoft are putting our more systems. They just aren't selling as many. You can't find a Wii in March because people that have never owned a game system are standing in line at Toys R Us to get one because they are so fun, and affordable.
I'm sorry that some of you are frustrated, but giving up now will just mean you go that much longer without having some serious fun!

This is really good advice. I picked mine up on Sunday (March 4th) and they had about 60 in stock. No one else in the area (Orange County, CA, USA) came close (Best Buy recently got 20, and everyone else seems to be getting 5 or 10 at a time). In my experience, Toys R Us gets more Wiis per shipment than Best Buy, Circuit City, or EBgames.
Call your local Toys R Us and ask if they have any or when they'll get them next. Show up as early as you can on the day they put them out (say 30 minutes or an hour before opening) and the odds are good that you'll get one.

I heard Wal-Mart has been getting some this week. Its sort of hard to grab one there though. I'll keep looking and hopefully get one before Spring break starts.

Thanks to this site, got my Wii March 4 at Target. Got up at 6:30 and was at target by 7. Nobody else showed up until 7:50! When we walked in, some guy asked if we were there for the Wii and told us not to rush because they had plenty - the kid in electronics said he thought they got 15 in. Took a friend, so I bought 2. I am thinking about selling it on Craigslist.
Was actually spending the weekend with a friends family and now they all want one. I tried to tell them how cool the Wii is before we got it, but they thought I was crazy for wanting to get up that early. His sister tried to buy the extra one I bought, but I told her I would get more money on Craigslist.
Of course, I called all the Targets in the area about 9:30 the night before to find out how many they would have in stock. They all told me they didn't have shipments in yet, but I had been tracking them online, so I knew better.
So, my advice is to be patient and check the forums to see what is going to be in the ads for Sunday. Depending on your area, show up an hour early and get your Wii as soon as they open.
Another piece of advice would be to buy any controllers when you find them! I already 3 controllers and so we were able to play with 4 people right out of the box. Also, check for coupons online. I got all my games for $10 off at Best Buy.
