Then again, kari, Nintendo was never a fan of online play, but they've made huge steps in that direction with Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. Developing something that works takes time.
I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Wii Sports: Online in the future.

I am sure there are a number of other games, including the Wii Fit, that they would enjoy playing with distant friends/family......

Wouldn't that require new software though? You can't just flip a switch and suddenly have full internet connectivity. It's possible that internet play would be available in Wii Sports 2 or something but who knows? Wii Fit would be even more difficult because it's made more for single player than multiplayer. It would need a full software overhaul.

Amen! I think Nintendo needs to stop trying to make all those sorry @$$ kiddie games, and just start making some games, ESRB be damned. The NES and SNES had some kick@$$ games that everyone loved, even the N64 had some, But all that went downhill when the entered the CUBE. I say that was their biggest problem and still continues to be. They need to stop giving a damn about their ratings and start making some games, And if they're not going to be making some new characters, then at least bring back some of the old school favorites and not f*** them up like they did Wario. Don't get me wrong, Warioware was cool and all, but what happened to that greedy s.o.b that everyone loved in Warioland. I hope this is all just part of Nintendo's plan to make a comeback later and actually make something that blows everyone's minds, cuz it seems like until they make the change, they'll continue to be ridiculed.

I'm just wondering here... what would you require of a game for it to "blow everyone's mind"?
Have you been watching? Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros. Brawl, Phantom Hourglass, etc., etc., etc.. These games are all selling super well and receiving ridiculously good scores from the press.
If that track record doesn't constitute "mind blowing," I don't know what does.

Mind Blow stuff from Nintendo would be
Wii Music, Wii Sports 2(with online), Kid Icarus, D : DoC, Kirby, SD/Hard Drive support.
Thats how Nintendo can take E3 home.

this can all be solved thru one thing, nintendo needs to make as many games for its primary fanbases (the guys/girls who grew up with franchise games) as it does for the people they are trying to reach out too. IVE GONE AS FAR AS PLAYING WORLD OF WARCRAFT TO SATISFY MY GAMING NEEDS. good game by the way, im struggling not to play 3-4 hours at a time. make WOW on the wii, now thats a good idea. back to what i was saying, WII WANT FRANCHISES! Nintendo has become a whore when it comes to making game.
the games are short, bad but still cost 50 dollars.

I sadly have to agree with that list. But who knows, There's been an announcement that their working on something BIG, that's gonna be revealed at E3 this year. Maybe it will help, or outright fix some of these issues!

One more `could care less about voice chat' vote.
Generally, if playing friends ... they're at my place, else easy enough to put on speakerphone.
If I'm not friends with folks [MK Wii, etc] ... I have zero interest in hearing them yap away.
Yes, I could put it on mute ... but if I never take it off mute, why do I want it? IMO, I just see no desire, nevermind some folks IME can be quite annoying.

Riduculed where?
Message boards by people who either:
--- Can't quit comparing the Wii to all historic consoles/games and appear [from the zillion posts on boards] that they will never get over their favorite old console. If you think the N64/etc was the greatest ... keep playing it and don't expect the Wii to be an old console.
--- Fanboys of all other consoles
--- Folks who value spec over gameplay
I'd bet as they ship a million plus consoles monthly + are selling stuff like hotcakes ... they could care less about the griping people on message boards [who by my estimation they could NEVER please, unless they re-release their old consoles/games all wrapped into one].
I think folks are missing Nintendo's strategy here. They are [unlike the competition] not concerned about the 5 million self-stated `hardcores' and realize that there's 300+ million other people in this country, many of whom have played their share of video games and might like to play again.
Many [like myself] who played as kids yet find little appeal in the PS3/Xbox with their annoying controller style, and hours spent just getting core competency in games before they're much fun. [too many hobbies/friends/divertments, so little time]
That's not to say the `non-hardcores' want simple games with no depth [so says the 50+ hours of ProEvo 08 I've played] ... but after a while all FPS seem the same, and the endless string of button combos to memorize quite tedious.
I know a lot of folks my generation [Atari 2600 as kids] + were in college during NES/etc days .... that have returned to their gaming days, much due to the Wii.
When looking at `complete audience' I'm sorry to inform folks here that you're a small sub-group of `people currently gamers', which is a % of `people who love to play video games' ... which is what Nintendo is aiming at [plus the folks who have never played games before].
To think that only those that are currently of the `right' age are the only ones to produce for is not good business. What I see with the Wii is a broadening of the gaming audience, that in 10 years we will see kids, parents, young-male-gamer-types, families, grandparents ... that there will be gamers of every type, taking console gaming to a whole new, `huge' level.
Just my opinion, but so often on these boards only a small subgroup is represented ... one that often forgets that they are a small market compared to people who WANT to game, but hate the focus of the PS3/Xbox on the old controller and bleeding-edge graphics over `fun'.

A really great post.
I bought my Wii a week ago by chance. Was not looking for it, did not set out to buy it. I saw one, decided to buy it and I am not looking back. When they first came out, I could not understand the hype, which then turned into hate from other console owners saying it was junk. So on so forth.
What I have come to expect from Nintendo - is what I have right now from my Wii. Simple, fun and uncomplicated fun. I don't have to log on to "get off". I don't have to voice chat with some 12 year old motor mouth that thinks he is Einstein. I don't have to deal with belligerent 20 year olds that think they are the l33t32t gammer on the planet! Nope.
I turn on my Wii, pick my poison and have fun. I don't have some weird controller to hold or contort. I don't have a multitude of buttons to press. I can just play! Fun games.
I own 2 PS3's and 1 Wii. I did own a 360 but sold it. I did not play it hardly at all. My PS3's - I own no games for. I use them for watching Blu-Ray and downloaded content from my computer. I am not a console "gamer". Never have been, never will be. I play games casually, for fun.
Now, there are all these people out here that want the Wii to be some HARD CORE - BAD TO THE BONES - SHOOTEM DEAD AND KILL THEM - gaming system. Will never happen. Ever. Nintendo is again - known as a "family" console. Ever wonder why it's white and has blue lights? Think about it. Look at their commercials. Especially for Wii Fit. Notice something? Smooth, clean, white, simple. Un-complicated. Stress free. When you say Nintendo - you think classics - Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, Donkey Kong.. etc etc. You don't think Socom, Call of Duty, Halo.
IMO - I would not classify console gaming as HARD CORE. I personally think saying that is kinda joke-ish. Hi - I have a 360/PS3/Wii and I am a hardcore gamer! Sounds kinda dumb.
In the end - if your not happy with something - find an alternative. Everyone keeps complaining about this and that and blah blah blah. How Nintendo never listens.
YET - You all still buy? YET - Wii is the BEST SELLING console out there. I might be missing something, but Nintendo is obviously doing something right?
Last, but not least - GIVE ME SONIC! Remake the classics for the Wii please.

Nice post. Too many people slating other consoles - just play and be happy with what you've got!
I think there are at least some sonic games on Virtual Console...

Exactly. Each one is different. Find one you like and play it. If you don't like it or it does not meet your needs - don't expect the world to drop what it's doing and go "OH - You don't like it? Well, let us redesign, re-manufacture and re-ship, just for you". Lol.
I plan on getting the sonic VC games shortly. Birthday coming up so I hope I get a Wii points card - I was just hoping for a newer version with some better graphics or what not. Doesn't bother me, I like the side scroll games better than the 3d ones.

Oooh! that reminds me! There is a new sonic game in development - Sonic Unleashed (click for info).
It has breathtaking "proper" next-gen graphics, and classic sonic gameplay - I read an article in ONM and it said the game looked and played amazing (but they only had one level to go on) - does look nice though. It's kind of shiny 3d graphics but 2d sonic gameplay, it looks like it will work really well.
It's coming out on other platforms too (xbox/ps3) but the Wii dev team said they're putting extra effort into the Wii version so it turns out as good as possible.
Only time will tell

Thanks! That does look promising. It has 3d graphics, yet maintains that 2d feel that Sonic is known for. I just hope the game looks like the video. They usually never do, but anything is better than the older ones. They are still classic and fun - just need something newer
Very nice. I will have to make a note on this so I can remember. I loved Sonic on the Sega Genesis. The best game they ever made.

Nintendo's online is very annoying. We need an option to turn friend codes on and off or something along those lines.
