At this point in the game who knows with nintendo. More power for on line stuff and even hosting your own server may be some thing go with. I'm sure the wireless standard will double till the point that your signal can actually cut some one in half.
There is one other controller that is actually used by 3d modelers to move in 3d. It could be used as some sort of haptic feed back device also. Directional rumble should be on the list also.
A more upgradable Wii mote should be standard also as in one where you can make it pin point accurate via another sensor bar or some thing.
I'm also wondering what impact [f]oleds are going to have on these new devices.
SD card games? Sounds promising in some ways. It may remind people too much of carts and copy protection may become a problem. Yet the way nintendo is dealing with roms being linked to one system is actually working pretty well. I mean really this is the first time you could easliy back up your purchased roms to your PC and still run them later by loading them. Piracy is not much of a problem because the Wii actually knows what it can and can't play.
If any thing I think game of the future may run off a future version of solid state drives which actually use a form of Sd memory I believe. I know so arcade games come on hard drives now. An solid state drive is very small yet has some weight to it.
Another thing to what if the drive also had extra chips with it also? Imagine super mario galaxy NEXt having a physics chip on board the Hard drive? technically it can be done but such a thing would take us back to the days of carts. Seriously though what if the next system could support stuff like this and normal disks? You wouldn't update the system since each game would come with the needed extra chips? This would be a really big problem for some though including the so called hardcore. Yet chips are getting smaller and smaller and if wireless connection improve you will not have to plug any thing into any thing any more you could just leave your game on the shelf and simply browse them thur you system channels, how cool would that be?
I think the hardest part to judge is the graphics. Sure Nintendo/PS/Xbox can all be running 1080p by 2012 for a decent price to consumers, but really trying to go beyond that "if there is a beyond that" would probably be a waste of money.
We are at a point where the technology has out paced the consumers by alot. They have to wait a good 5-10 years before HD is in the majority of homes anyways.
I see all of the systems being HD most likely 1080p unless they do push 2160p around 2015 time schedual its set for "rare chance but possibal" but I don't see this happening anytime soon it's to far of a leap and everyone else is lagging to far behind that the investment wouldn't be worth it beyond the very small niche market.
Maybe Blu-ray maybe not not sure at this point, so far upconverting DVD players are outselling Blu-ray players and the amount of downloadable content is increasing for HD in the form of movies and games. Possibal all of them will be Blu-ray being the so far highest supported form of HD physical media but who knows. They have the 32 gig SD cards and 64's in work right now so they could swtich over to that being consumers use these already in every day electronics such as camera's,cell phones,mp3's ect ect.
All of them are going to mess with controller interface in some way. If its used or not who knows but the sucess the Wii has had just by introducing it is going to force the others to follow suit. Might be somethign as simple as PS3's tilt motion recognition but it will still be there in some form on every console I bet.
I would like to see a more refined pointer setup and a more sensative and responsive motion control. It's not that any of these control styles are better, but each do very well in different games and I hope all 3 systems implement what we currently have as optional control interfaces. Hopefully we will see some more stuff live with the video tracking technology "ps3 eyetoy and others like it"
And give us plenty more DLC on all systems, best thing to happen to gaming in decades. Indie games, Retro games, Classic games... All awsome!
I think the new wii will be completely motion oriented. The next step in virtual reality gaming is obviously head, chest, and leg movement. a combination of this technology: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw
and full body motion detection.
Okay, arm movement and head tracking is cool, but the head tracker looks weird.
Isn't my Twin Mini Wiimotes good? (the two identical, attatched by a wire, without 1+2 buttons)
Wii Username:
killik and another... but only the friends i met can see that one.
WiitnessID made a few good points in his comment, I do think that Nintendo will use a new form of cartridge, disc, etc. The motion controls will change, I believe they will use something like the Z-camera which is currently in production by a third party compony. Look the Z-camera up on youtube, looks perfect for a Wii type console. But they will still have something of a classic controller, if they use this camera technology, for the games like Smash bros and the like.

it would need blu-ray or HD for 1080i wouldn't it?

1080i is a form of HD so yes it would have to be HD to be 1080, Bllu-ray is just one way to get HD content to fit onto a physical DVD style disk. Same thing as a DVD but much larger to fit all the extra goodness... Who knows what htey will use though at the time it comes out.
Not to be a spoilsort but i would try not to thin kabout the next ninty console as i am really enjoying the Wii but as said above somewhere i would like to see more virtual reality experiance added to games, i would like to know i belong in a game and what ever interactions i make in reality i can make in virtual reality.

ah, well i'd still like blu-ray that would be cool.
Wasn't there an article somewhere saying nintendo was talking to AMD to use the next gen of AMD dual cores for the next gen of their consoles? that would be kinda cool i guess.

Should be pretty cheep still. You figure in 2012 when they start dishing out next gen consoles, more people will have HD and the cost to make HD electronics will have fallen dramatically. Even recently this is true t.v's going from 3 grand down to 1 or less in a matter of few years.
Aslong as they go with the new "standard" of 1080 then i will be happy, don't really care if it's in download form, SD, or Blu-ray disk... Just want the best of everything. Looks,Games, and Controlls on next gen.
Dont know if anyone on this blog from the Uk watches the Gadget Show on Channel 5, but they were showcasing a gaming jacket that made it feel like you were getting shot etc. Perhaps if the Wii2 has body tracking this could be incorperated into the design?
i was thinking about this. if youre going to do it. you have to make it backwards compatible with the wii wouldnt you? so youd have to have motion control. and with the ds. to make it backwards compatible with ds games. so youd have to have a touch screen. i dont think you can do it any other way. it would be way better for sales and fan base.

There's no way to predict what they're going to do. Everytime people try to predict what the next thing is going to be of anything they always seem to want to incorporate many aspects of the currently existing product.
Keep in mind that with the exception of the gameboy line, each console hardly ever has anything in common with it's predecessor in terms of appearance.
As for internal hardware, obviously they're going to upgrade that's a given. I think they'll put more emphasis on graphical capability next time around seeing as how many people complained about the very noticeable difference between the wii and it's competitors this generation. But Nintendo still will continue to focus on gameplay over graphics regardless, they'll just pay a bit more attention to graphics along the way next time.
Other than that, there's not much else I would be willing to guess about seeing as you never really know what Nintendo is going to do next.
