You could do the same thing for Nintendo. Granted Nintendo does have its headlining franchises as any other console does like Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong ect... They will probably be around for as long as Nintendo is around. Maybe even after your dead your great great grand kids will be playing some form of Mario.
The fact is these are still the BEST SELLING GAMES in history... Go look at the top 100 sold video games of all time the first 15 or so of them are all Nintendo titles. Maybe you are sick of the franchise and the sequals but obviously no one else is.
It's not like they do not come out with anything new, Nintendo always tosses in true NEW games on every console some stick some don't look at Pikmin and Animal Crossing both fairly new franchises from Nintendo that acctually have a good following now. You could go on and on of decent games like Excite truck, Batallion wars, Wii Fit ect... all newer games that did fairly well they just don't compare to the headliners and probably never will because they will not invest as much money into something with a smaller or all together new following untill it proves itself with time.
Nintendo has been outdoing every other company in terms of profit for years because of this smart buisness sence.
Put the money where you will get it back.
I don't always like this as many other gamers probably don't. Its awsome to come across a high budget unique game once in a while but this is rare and usually when this happens it rarely reaches the sales numbers it needs to ever stick around so it's more like a shooting star than anything. But that is no reason to belittle the quality titles we see year after year. They are always good otherwise they wouldn't be around, many other long term games died after so many sequals if you can make it past #3 heck past #6 without so much as a hicup in sales your doing something right.
I like to think of Nintendo as a stepping stone for most gamers. You start out with Nintendo and if you get really into gaming you will work your way up the ranks as you get older and probably move onto more mature consoles and games.
This is probably a good percentage of the average gamer today and how they got into gaming. Thats why Nintendo numbers never really seem to die down too much except when the overall industry dies down. Like all consoles they have there hardcore fans that will always buy everything up and then they have the majority of new commers.
Now in this generation for some reason gaming has become acceptable again in the public eye no longer blamed for violent lazy fat children...lol
This has alot to do with the concept of the Wii making it more family oriented and physically involved. Now it may not be your favorite console but it has provided a boost to the video game industry in a way we have never seen before, and all this means is more and more people will work up the ranks making video gaming as a whole more popular for everyone.
The Wii is dominating 2008 like it or not and most likely the rest of this generation in terms of game sales, console sales, and very soon even attachment rate. But in the end Nintendo fan or not this is a great thing for all gamers. The more people that are involved in the industry spending money the more variety and cutting edge technology will be brought to us.
The apperance of video gaming might be changing and it's no longer stricktly the elitist that decide the direction, but because of this we will acctually see leaps and bounds in every aspect of gaming.
Even Martha Stewart agrees
