Wanting a Wii, Pro/Cons

Ok so i at the moment i own an Xbox 360 and its the best console out hands down but......if you have one of your own you know that its rather easy to get to the stage when you want to throw it and gears of war out the window, it happens. Now, i dont get a lot cash.....because im a lazy 17 year old that doesnt have a job, but i just got 290 quid, and well you can see where im going, im looking into getting myself a Wii because well its an entirely new experience plus i have heard a lot of raving reviews about how how enjoyable it is and it has intrigued me, im just looking for some positives and negatives on the console, because i havnt as yet got the chance to test one out for myself. Thanks

Possible buy day............this Friday

The Wii is a great console, although I don't agree with Xbox360 being the best (Mine broke down 3 times in the first week i had it), but I don't want to argue on preference.

I find the Controls for the Wii are incredibly fun, being able to actually slash at an enemy instead of pressing a couple of buttons adds a whole new level to the game. Another plus for the Wii is that fact you can buy old Retro Console games, now whether or not you like/liked playing those games is up to you, but a vast amount of Wii owners would say that it is a great addition to the Console.

Now even if the controls are fun, they do take some "Getting used to" but even that will only take less than a week. Another down about the controls, is that with some games they are somewhat unresponsive, Games like Dragon Blade sometimes require you to make large movements for the character to actually slash in the direction you want him to(As you might see in game reviews). But other games like Zelda can be played with your hands sitting on your lap and a simple twitch of the wrist will suffice. Also, if you do intend to buy the Console, don't expect top graphics, as the console is the least powerful of the lot. But graphics aren't everything, right?

All in all, I have not once looked back since I bought my Wii. Although with the current games out here in AussieLand it's makeing harder for me to not buy a PS3 aswell. But once Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Kart Wii hit the shelves here, I'll be even happier.

Pros:
Great Nintendo games and series' (Legend Of Zelda, Mario, Metroid Prime etc.)

Wiimote and Nunchuck make for a great way to play and really immerse you into the games.

Its cheap and comes backwards compatible with Gamecube games and controllers. If you connect your Wii to the net, you can also download old Nintendo games from the shop channel with a Wii points card.

Cons:
Poor Third Party Support

Graphics are not anywhere near those of the 360/Ps3.

Shovelware titles (Horsez, Catz etc. please avoid these games at all costs).

Thats just a little summary there, its really a great system and I enjoy playing it everyday. Plus 2008 appears to be good for Wii as third party support improves and a bunch of games made by Nintendo are on their way as well.

Pros:

- Great controls
- Free online
- Amazing first party support
- Cheaper games
- Internet/weather/photo/news channels
- Classic virtual console titles
- Upcoming WiiWare launch

Cons:

- You get what you pay for online, although mario kart is supposed to be well done and I think nintendo is making progress
- No voice chat
- Third party support is lacking, I'm confident it will pick up like it did for the DS though
- Graphics aren't spectacular
- Limited storage space, but you can save things to an SD card (can't play games from it though)

Summary:

My biggest gripe with the wii is the disappointing online. If you're happy playing single player games the first party titles are AMAZING. In short, if you are interested in playing the games that nintendo produces for the wii then you will be happy with your purchase. If you're not interested in any specific games that are out right now I'd save your money and maybe pick up a couple xbox games and then save the rest to see how things pan out in the future.

first of all as an owner of all 3 next gen consoles (ps3, 360, Wii) I agree 360 is the best console out there.

as far as the Wii goes.........

pros

price

totally DIFFRENT way of playing video games

can play any gamecube game on the console

virtual console is the BEST you can get alot of old titles for older consoles

there are SOME good games

Cons

there are only SOME good game LOL

(and theres a thread about this) 95% of the games you have to use motion controls and SOMETIMES if your dead tired and just wanna lay back and relax with a video game the Wii (in most cases) will not due

most of the games seem to be directed at very young kids

system memory is WAYYYY too small so plan on buying an SD card

All in all I'd would buy one again for sure, I love my Wii but like everything else it has pros/cons

I never said THAT would drain your energy, I said if you were already dead tired (as in from something else) and just want to lay back (I.E. with a classic controler style) and just play

I like mine, to an extent. Weeding out all the BS games to find a decent one mature enough for a 20 year old yields me buying a game every 6 months or so. It's not worth it to have the system if most of the games are "Barbie's Horse Stables!", and crap like that. Eh, I dunno, it's iffy.

Pro-You came at the right time in terms of video game selection, with the biggest titles on wii being released recently or in the next week (Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, and Mario Kart). You are given 3 winners right there for almost any 17 year old.
Con-Online up to this point has been bad (I'm american so I can't confirm the awesomeness of Mario Kart's online, even though it has been said to be great.

Alright, doing my best to remove any and all fanboyism from my post...

Pros
- Let's face it, Nintendo is in the business of making amazing games regardless of what technology they're using. Nintendo's first-party games on the Wii consistently get great scores from gaming press like IGN. You absolutely cannot go wrong with Zelda, Mario, Smash, Metroid, etc..
- Online play, though still limited, is free and getting better. To be honest, I love Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 on the Wii. It's proof that a third-party can make a great game (I dare say it's the best controlling game of its type on the system right now) with amazing online play. Yes, it lacks voice chat, but it does give 32-player support with practically no lag.
- Controls really can get you involved in the game on a new level. The aforementioned MoHH2 can very much change the way you think about playing games.
- There are many mature games on the system that somehow don't get recognized. The Wii seems to be getting branded as a system for kids, but a quick look at the list of games on the system will say otherwise. The best version of RE4 is here. No More Heroes proves that a game can be interesting, artistic, fun, and as bloody as hell itself. The list is very long.
- Third-party support is increasing. We're constantly hearing about companies really throwing their support behind the system.
New technological pushes are showing that the system is more graphically capable than developers have led us to believe. (See the technology behind The Conduit for an example.)
- Great for parties and entertaining relatives. (Wii Sports is loved by every person I've ever met, regardless of age. Rayman Raving Rabbids has so much insane humor that it's hard for people to not laugh at it. For those of your friends/family that actually play games, Smash Bros. and the impending Mario Kart are sure to be hits.)
- The Virtual Console. Seriously, this is amazing. Since you're kind of on the younger end of the spectrum, the nostalgia factor probably won't carry much weight for you. Still, there are a bunch of absolutely amazing games on the Virtual Console... and with games ranging in price from $5-$10, $11 if you must pick up Sin & Punishment. (I don't know your local pricing, though.) Given your general lack of income, this allows for easily acquiring new games on a whim.
- WiiWare. It's just around the corner, and games like LostWinds and the new Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles games look great. Of course, who can disregard Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People?
- Downloadable channels. Sure, you can get your weather and local/international news through the internet, but it's nice to see today's forecast displayed on your initial screen when turning on your Wii. Nicer yet is that, unless if things have changed, Nintendo is going to be rolling out the ability to download demos of DS games through the Wii.
- Price point. The system is fairly cheap, and the games run cheaper than the other system.

Cons
- RPGs still don't have a strong presence on the Wii (Baroque -go Roguelikes- and some others may be helping this soon).
- Many FPSes have flopped (way to go, Red Steel; may your successor live up to your ambitions... thankfully, Metroid Prime 3 and MoHH2 are amazing).
- Sports games aren't always what they could be (Capcom's We Love Golf looks to be shaping up extremely well, however, and the latest Pro Evolution Soccer and Madden games are spoken highly of).
- Almost everyone you invite over will want to play Wii Sports, the game that comes with the system at no extra cost, instead of the games you'll spend money on.
- Sometimes, you might just feel too lazy to make use of motion/IR controls.
- Other times, gesture/IR controls aren't what they should be and feel gimmicky.
- Just like with every other system ever made, there are many games that just are not very good on the system. (This can hardly be considered a "con" for the Wii, though.)
- Online is developer-driven. In the case of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (an otherwise amazingly fun game), we've seen absolutely terrible performance due to shoddy coding. In the case of Smash Bros., the matchmaking servers get clogged up due to how many people are trying to play at once. (Actual gameplay is usually pretty solid for people with fairly solid connections.) Then again, we've seen developers do really well with games like MoHH2.
- Nintendo's games are loaded with content... making it hard to feel like you really completed the game before moving on. (I believe Mario Galaxy has 242 Stars to collect, Zelda takes around 30 hours to beat... I think... with lots more to do after that, Smash Bros. has a ridiculous amount of stuff to unlock... not even including time spent playing online, and so forth.)

That's all I've got at the moment. If I come up with more to add, I'll add it later. Basically, I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with the purchase of the Wii. I thoroughly recommend it.

I don't think I would recommend it, given how much money you have. I'd probably stick to buying games for the 360 if I was in your situation. Although if you really want to play first party Nintendo titles it would be a good choice, because you sure aren't buying it for its third party offerings.

But again, I would probably put that money towards software for the 360. It has a bunch of good games coming out for it this year that you'll probably wish you had the money for when they are finally released.

...or a better suggestion would be get a job

Pros:
-Fantastic first-party games, nearly none have been anything less than mediocre.
-Motion controls are innovative
-Hardly ever breaks down, unlike the 360
- Small and compact, can fit into tight spaces
-Low risk of falling over with stand, although it would be better if you put it in a spot where it won't fall over

Cons:
-Horrible, awful, disgusting, mutated, evil, monsterish online play. It's like trying to tell someone something with only a head, no eyes, or ears.
-Dumping ground for trash. Only second to the Atari 2600 back before the great crash of 1983.
-Motion controls can be slightly off at times
-You look like an idiot playing Wii Sports

I don't know, my PS2 is still better than it. Wii comes second so far, but I still have to build a library for my 360.
