Nintendo has made some bold predictions regarding the sales of botht he DS and Wii. Wii could reach 50 Million units sold, while the DS would reach 100 Million sold. Nintendo has sold 24.45 Million Wii's so far, so those numbers may not be too far off, especially considering Nintendo is planning on upping the production rate to 2.4 Million units.
Software sales seem to be improved as of late as well, as the Wii has seen its number of million dollar games rise from 5-26. Wii Fit (1.85 million units in Japan) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (1.61 million units in Japan and 3.24 million units in North America).
If Nintendo was able to sell 25 Million more units by next March that could leave Sony and Microsoft battling it out for 2nd.
The recent sales show the Wii selling 710k in one month. Around 210k for the PS3, PS2, and 200k for the 360. The DS almost sold 700k, and the PSP is around 200k as well. Flat out Nintendo is killing them. Brawl sold 2.7 million units, and it's closest competitor only sold 700k. The rest of the game sales list trails off into 200k-300k units sold.
50 million by 2009? I'm not sure. 2009 is going to be a very bad year for almost everyone on the planet. How bad? No idea. I'm not arrogant enough to claim anything like judgement day will happen. But I have enough common sense to know we are going to hit that brick wall very soon. I estimated the Wii will sell around 40 million by the end of this year. I'd need a time machine to estimate the unpredictability of next year.
