That was the goal of the Wii in the first place, To bring in new gamers. If they decided to sell only to Nintendo Gamers then they would have the same sales as the others. If not the same status of the Gamecube.
Thing is they still need to improve things for the new gamers aswell. Graduate them if you will to a higher status, show them more, get them more invovled, get them buying more. In the end thats the best way to revive on old franchise. But if you go all hardcore your just hurting profits in the end and limit what you can offer you audience, atleast at what price range you can offer it to them limiting your audience in general.
360 is doing alright because it has its niche group that will always be there and slowly add onto that base of fans. Look at Sony though, they went from being the number one console with the PS2 having all types of consumers from non-gamers to hardcore, "just like the Wii". Then with the PS3 introduced a "hardcore only" console with a high price console and high priced games. They are now bumped down in the same group as 360 instead of ontop where they really should be based on the old fan base. Sales are slowly picking up but without price drops they will never reach the same status they once had.
Nintendo has to figure out how to appeal to everyone, but still keep the gamers happy. Aslong as they do it durring the Wii's life and not next gen they will be fine. If they hold off like Sony did then introduce a "hardcore console" next gen I doubt they will get anything near Wii status.

Maybe there are not a lot of harcore gamers on the Wii but the fact is we need the third party support badly.
I am sorry but I am not a fanboy of any system and I do get tired of too many games trying to be cute. I can get sick of Mario this and that. I do like Mario Kart but sometimes the too many extras and powerups get to be be too much. It would be nice to have Mario Kart and a realistic racer with online capabilities on the same game system.

I don't know about that, The hardcore market can be seen normally in the first 6 months of launch sales usually. The ones willing to spend the extra cash and wait in line. The same group that buys up plenty of games and accessories. Maybe Nintendo hardcore doesn't spend all day playing one game but then again with the game prices they can afford more then a couple games lol, unlike the ps3/360 hardcore.
But they have a large hardcore Nintendo crowd thats for sure. I would say It's a good 10-15 million on each console. You can see that reflected in game sales aswell. Attachment rate of the Wii compared to 360 in the same time frame is higher right now.
But then again they don't want all hardcore eaither if it was all hardcore the sales would already be stalling like the 360. And They would not have as much to offer for the future.

hasnt the wii sold like 20 million? i seriously doubt 10-15 mil make up that. maybe 3 million at most, hardcore usually make up the smallest % of a console sales. and 360/ps3 games are only 10 dollars more.. the reason the hardcore play a single game for longer is because of the content rich online multiplayer modes.

Thanks for reminding me to delete my old sig.. ha ha, I see you don't keep up with gaming news much.
It has sold 26 million worldwide. There is no way to measure hardcore population, its all speculation. Best guess is based on launch console sales and attachment rates. Granted there was alot of hype behind the Wii, but even so it has always outsold the other consoles 2 to 1, if half the people are buying the system are into the system it has as much if not more "hardcore" audience as the others. Once you figure in attachment rate it's up there aswell.
You can see that last gen too, Xbox,GC,PS2 all had the same sales for the first 3-6 months then boom ps2 took off and the other two system held steady.

Hardcore. Geesh. Get real. Hardcore what?! Back in my day games lasted anywhere from 30 mins to a few hours, for the whole game! If hardcore is determined by number of hours, then that too doesn't make sense. Most modern day games can still be won in less than 6 hours. Here's an idea. Stop with the labels. That's why Nintendo's owning. They aren't ruled by marketting stereo type, White, Male, age 18-25. More gamers, more variety, more long term benefit.
Cry like a baby. That's all I see in some of these posts. Well don't cry here. At least not for stuff average people want to actually see in entertainment.

Yes, and it's *still* outselling every other console on earth... So that says something about the other consoles, eh? Maybe it's their antique control systems?
I think even Sovieto can see that as the Wii has evolved, some of the features it now offers (wii-ware) will eventually mean you require more storage. So some users will need a hard-drive, or the ability to use SD cards for storage etc.

You don't need to go to next gen sales sites. The Info is right on the NPD every month, and you get quarterly sales info from the companies for sales outside the USA. Its just math not hard for anyone past 2nd grade..lol
Downside in console sales is they don't include returned units, and alot of companies don't mention it so it wont effect stock holders. So far they have the 360 estimates at near 10 percent returned units "almost 2 million", which overall I don't think is that bad when you consider at the peak of RROD they where up in the 30 percent range of bad units, and who knows how many people returned them for the heck of it. So even with failing units less than a third of people having issues returned them. Shows some dedication. PS3 and Wii are less than 1 percent of returns.
Other bad things when comparing sales numbers released from the manufacturer, is on and off they will give you "shipment sales" or the units that left the factory to store shelfs. MS said they sold 8.1 million Copies of Halo 3 in January yet the NPD says only about 7.75 million are in home as of THIS month. So they are not counting "real sales" but shipments which doesn't mean much. A lot of larger stores with return contracts send the unopened games right back if they don't | |
