In the latest issue of Club Nintendo - a Spanish Nintendo magazine - Reggie Fils-Aime and Shigeru Miyamoto shed light on some interesting questions. First, and perhaps most importantly, Fils-Aime reaffirmed Nintendo’s commitment to investigating a storage solution. However, Fils-Aime confirmed that it isn’t necessarily a hard drive. Reggie’s words are roughly translated to the following: “We are working on a storage solution and it is especially important in America because our consumers are using Wii Points for the Virtual Console and WiiWare. I want the people to have the right expectations; We have never said that it will be a hard drive nor have we mentioned how we will fix this issue, but we are going to deliver a better way to store the games.” Miyamoto added that gamers should expect an announcement in the future, as Nintendo is researching different technologies to provide Wii owners with some sort of relief.
Between the two, a few more tidbits were shared. As has been previously reported, a new Zelda is indeed in development for the Wii. Although, Miyamoto noted that the new title has not been shown (will not be shown, rather) until the team is confident in the level of development they are in. So basically, when the game is ready to be unveiled to the public, Nintendo will do so.
Other news includes: Miyamoto said that there are enough peripherals for the Wii so we shouldn’t expect too many more. Fils-Aime commented yet again on hardcore gamers feeling left out of this year’s E3 press conference and explained that there’s GTA for the DS and that Animal Crossing is a hardcore game.
Last but not least: No Wii demos on the Nintendo Channel, no DS redesign until sales slowdown, and Reggie Fils-Aime is flattered more than anything in regards to Microsoft’s recent announcements over Xbox Live avatars. New Pikmin confirmed once again. Miyamoto wouldn’t say whether or not we’ll see another Zelda game on the DS.

Come on Nintendo idea, go with the hard drive. You don't even have to make them, you can just let us connect our own hard drives to the Wii. Or at least, let us run VC games off the SD card.

Oh my... I know exactly what theyre going to do...
Spend all the money theyve accumulated on Wii sales and start setting up remote data-warehouses for us to log onto and store all our Wii crap. Prob allocate 5Gb per person.
If this comes true you all owe me something.
Isn't that pretty much what they do already?

That would suck hardcore. I want to be able to access all of my DLC and Wiiware crap when I take it places where I don't have internet access. Surely, they would have thought of this and therefore stricken remote storage as an option.
Agreed. Having the storage solution be "online" is arrogant and presumptuous. It won't fly.
Nintendo need do nothing more that provide a firmware update that allows USB flash drives and/or hard drives. That's it. The endless foot-dragging on this is inexcusable. I'd have traded "The Nintendo Channel" for that easily. Nintendo needs to get its priorities in-order.

I agree with the update to allow us to plug our own hard drives in. Also I can't believe they didn't say anything about if they were going to have a new GUI. Slackers. There hasn't been a Wii update in ages.
..no we get 512mb of storage... once that runs out we need to start swapping data onto SD cards.
Think about it- Nintendo's server records the games we buy, so we don't have to buy them again and they can be redownloaded when required. That's basically what you were suggesting.

I gave Nintendo an ideal solution. Have the Wii send VC, and save data wireless to your computer hard drive. Nintendo acknowledged it's possible and is looking into it, however... If Nintendo doesn't go down this path, in fear of pirates.... YARRRR! Expect home brewers to go down this path.
I see a lot of great ideas supressed because Nintendo fears pirates, hackers, modders, and child molestors(Online chat is a joke). Nintendo needs to get over these flaws before addressing anything else.

My feeling is that Nintendo won't release a firmware update that will allow any generic USB HDD to connect through the Wii's USB ports. I think they're honestly looking at a way to implement a proprietary storage solution, similar to what Microsoft's current plan is.

Exactly! They are holding themselves back over these fears. Being aware of and addressing these issues is one thing. Being paralyzed by them is another.
Nintendo never gives us concrete info on anything xD
But honestly, if not a hard-drive it better still be a damn good solution. At this point I only see myself buying games for the system and not doing much more downloading but who knows what will come out down the road.

Hackers have proved that with software updates, the Wii can support SDHC which would allow us 32gb flash-cards. Nintendo could update the firmware to support this and loading games/channels directly from the SD slot. This is the best solution and the cleanest as your system will not have any attachments hanging off it.
Other options not quite as good are proprietary USB drives, or proprietery card that uses the Gamecube memory slot. Both of these allow for fast transfer of data and proprietary encryption etc.
There is no way they will support plug-n-play hard-drives. It makings hacking and stealing content waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to easy. And they want this solution to be simple enough for soccer-moms to use.
