You can't say sales figures mean "squat" when they clearly mean a lot, and especially were the whole point of the topic. I'm sorry that because the "novelty" of the motion controls has worn off for you, that obviously the rest of the consumers around the world don't share your same views.

Sales show the demand for the console. If I do recall, the PS3 has motion controls, no? Yet the Wii sales are not divided by that at all. Infact it considered that the Xbox360 and PS3 divides each others sales on the graphics concept. They are both losing money on their consoles where as the Wii makes a profit on every console sold. There are a few reasons why the Wii is doing so well.
1) Inexpensive-This is the most inexpensive console tradationally on the market, only matched by lower tier Xbox consoles.
2) Controller design-This isn't discussing motion controls at all. The controller looks like a TV remote, an intended design. It is meant to appeal to all audiences, even those whom never played video games.
3) Casual games- The casual market has always existed but always overlooked on the console scene. Now high quality casual games are being made for the console scene (Dominately by Nintendo).
4) Killer Apps- No matter what, there are games on the Wii that cannot be found on any other system including their long time franchises as well as other software such as Wii Sports and Wii fit and much more.
Now lets look at Sony's Playstation and PS2 History to it's success.
1) Inexpensive CD player- At the time, music was being done on either a cassette player or a CD. The playstation could play CDs which was fairly inexpensive compared to other CD players.
2) Inexpensive DVD player- For a fair amount of time, the PS2 was the cheapest DVD player on the market and is still a decent one at that.
3) Exclusive Software- While first party Software was decent, the third party exclusives proved to be very good.
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...rike/stats.jpg
Look at the stats very carefully. You will notice that both charts include a major leader. The bottom chart is outdated with sony selling 140 million consoles total and the Gamecube and Xbox both selling about 24 million consoles total. We will combine that to a total of 188 million consoles sold. That means at best there are 188 million console consumers total granted this does ignore that people bought over multiple platforms. The PS2 has the multimedia concept placed down. While the PS3 boasts far more, it doesn't express all the same competitive features its predeccessors had. However, the Wii has its own advantage that its predecessor did not have.
- A casual market appeal(That have always been working towards before the wii but not to the extent it has been able to do recently)
-Its core base already been installed(People whom have bought Gamecubes are likely to buy a Wii as well).
Now when you add the concept that Wii is trying bolster beyond multimedia, they do have an advantage over the other consoles. The Blu-ray is not necessary by any means. No one needs 25 gigs of space for a disc for developing games let alone 50 gigs. No one is going to be able to maximize their profit on it. People are still satisfied with DVDs so a Blu-ray player is not that compelling.

so are u saying its not new or unusual any more?
i do agree that there are low scoring games on wii.
third parties are getting better though.

Nintendo happens to make some of my favorite software and hardware. I have been playing nintendo products since I was a kid as well as Sega. My favorite system of all time is my Dreamcast which to this day I still play. I did buy a PS2. The only thing I liked about it was the DVD feature which it still acts as default in my household and the third party software. I actually hated the PS2. Some of my brand new discs would get busted by the machine and I always ended up buying brand new discs. The other thing I hated was the controller. It was busted up on me to the point that I was buying new ones every 6 to 12 months. I have only owned 3 gamecube controllers ever. Only one of them went defunct on me.

I've had my PS2 for almost 4 years now and its one of those big old ones, so you must have bad luck or something. anyways I did like some of the games for it like Ratchet and Clank and God of War II, but i do enjoy the wii more.

^ Yeah, classic Nintendo franchises always make people hold on to Nintendo, even though there are great games on other consoles also.

the highest quality stuff is NEVER worth the price, because at highest quality means its better than the rest, so people are willing to opay more so they are willing to charge more. expecailly considering that quality will be available for half the price only a year down the line

Yep. People can't wait to buy the latest stuff, so they buy it for the outrageous starting price. But if they wait, they would get the same thing for $100+ cheaper. (i.e. the PS3)

I'm not saying Apple is low-quality or bad at marketing... they certainly are not either. But they are from a vastly different school-of-thought than Nintendo.

The problem with that statement is that Sony had to take a lot of parts out to make the PS3 cheaper. They removed the Emotion Engine resulting in PS2 games requiring software emulation.

I'm with white night, 2006-2011 is a pretty darn long console life. I also think that that date guarantees that it will be HD. And plenty of time to work out the kinks and get the "live-web" up and running.

Very interesting indeed. I wish I would be able to experience buying a console on its release for the first time, but I honestly don't trust Nintendo anymore. It will kill me, but I'll have to wait and see how it looks after its release.

My rule of thumb, never buy on around launch date. It is best to wait on a console for at least 4 months before buying it, better around a year. Games at launch tend to be mediocre, usually with no more than two considerable buys. After a few months, you see some better games, which to consider. Plus games from previous generations begin to become cheaper, allowing you to enjoy some good games at a better price. There are some exceptions. Consoles that tend to go against this trend are when they are weak in the market and need to work itself in. The only exception to this is the Xbox, which was just utter piece of crap from the start. The only reason why it picked up was a Killer App, Halo.

I'd be surprised if the next Wii is not HD. In a few years a lot more people will have HD tv's and it'll almost be a standard instead of an added feature. I'd hope they adopt an HDMI port, but maybe they'll keep their proprietary video port. Perhaps there is money in cables.
The Wii is innovative and a 'Wii HD' would probably expand on that, giving better graphics, more unique wiimote fuctions and probably more of a broad online experience. Online is always being tweaked and you never know what Nintendo might have up their sleeve.
Nintendo found a niche, in a way, and they might try to keep a 'less is more' approach. Well, it's not really a niche, but I'm sure a lot of experts wrote off the Wii based on it's inferior processing power...

Agreed. The Wii came out in a transitional market, so making it SD was a wise move. By the time the next Nintendo console comes out, this transitional market will be gone. Not making the next console HD would be suicidal.
We have a few more years of the Wii left still. We might see a "Wii 2.0" (like with more memory) within that timeframe but not a whole next-generation Nintendo console.
