Hai guys I'm new here...
I have Wii and I was trying to enter the Wii shop channel, but I got a message saying I have to upgrade my system before I can.
After I checked I found out my system version is 2.2, and I heard some controversies regarding the new version 3.4, so what say you guys? can I upgrade or should I keep my old version and avoid the Wii shop?

the only controversy ever surrounding Wii updates are whether or not they'll kill peoples access to the Homebrew Channel.

if you don't have that, or don't plan on getting it then you have no reason to ever worry about upgrades.

Correct. If you're not already playing in the risky realm of "homebrew" there's no reason to not upgrade. Go for it... it speeds up SD card access.

I don't use homebrew, but I never realized it was risky..?

The biggest risk is that the whole homebrew stuff could stop working any day, at Nintendo's whim. It's a cat-and-mouse game.

However, this software runs in a way not intended and it has dangerous access to the innards of the Wii. It is possible, if you do the wrong things, to "brick" your Wii. This can include running a seemingly harmless game/app that has a bug. So you are putting your faith and trust in those who write the games/apps you choose to run, and your own skills of being careful, if you delve into homebrew.

That gamble isn't suitable for everyone.

I didn't think of it that way, but I guess you have a point there.

Those homebrewers won't go down without a fight, I can assure you. Nintendo's last few attempts to stop it have failed miserably.

But like you say, it's a risk- I know of at least one way to brick the console if you're not careful with a certain homebrew program. Personally I'm willing to take that risk (mainly to stick it to Nintendo's region-locking policy), but it's not for everyone.

OH YES! I have been enjoying the speedy SD retrievel. Also using the Keyboard on the Mii Channel is pretty cool, I got sick of pointing for everything.
