The wii I beleive might have a remote build into the controller. Though this seems a little unlikely I like this extra attachement. It opens up even more possbilies for developers. I think this would be a great element in RPG's. You know like if you to sing a song you wouldn't have to push buttons you would just sing and see if you can't match the notes.
I think the wii microphone could be a huge succes if used it in Wii chat. I mean they were talking about the whole Wifi thing right? So if we could use the microphone and combine the technology when can talk with the people we are playing with. Kind of eleimants the fact that we could be countries away.
That could mutiplayer games so much better. That remote would be perfect for squad base shooter games. IT could aslo benefit RTS's to. Well what else could we execpt from Nintendo, they keep my on toes every day

A headset would be better. Having a mic in the controler would be a problem as you're singing the remote, how are you supposed to speak into it?

Perhaps, but remember the SpeakerCom for the Xbox? You inserted it into one of the two memory card slots on the controller and it let you simply talk outloud and people's voices would come out of it aswell.
I believe the only problem with it was you could only have one person talk at a time, a.k.a. you could talk, but you couldn't hear other people.
But unlike the SpeakerCom, the Wiimote will have a built in speaker and the mic, if there is one, would be placed probably on the top, so you could talk and hear your friends at the same time.
Here's a pic of the SpeakerCom:
http://www.nosegrind.com.au/images/SpeakerCom.jpg
Also, doesn't Mario Kart for the DS have voice chat? If that is true, I would find it hard for Nintendo to justify putting a mic into the DS, their portable system, and not include one with the Wii, their new generation console.
That said, I'm not sure I'd like what people online are saying to be heard, so an optional headset would be cool, too.

Yes, exactly!
I'm not sure how many of the people on this forum have played on Xbox Live with a mic, but anyone that has knows it's really not all it's cracked up to be.
Unless you play with your friends and your friends only, you're going to hear cus words, suggestive conversations, and really annoying people being rude to you and you don't even know them.
I generally play with the mic off, except for when I'm playing something like Capture the Flag in Halo 2 to strategize.

The microphone is standard in the ds and is an add-on for the cube so i would be shocked if there wasnt a mic included with the controller.

I'm almost 100% certain that I read in an article on one of those sites like IGN or something like that that Nintendo were not planning on puttin a mic into the remote. I can't give you a source for this atm but I can give you some reasons I can think of why a mic might not be the smartest of ideas.
If you did put a mic in the remote then where would it go? Picture how you're holding the remote, it would need to be somewhere near the top so when you bring it up to speak your hand doesn't twist awkwardly. Also it couldn't be used 'live' so to speak in game as it would require you to move the controller to your mouth thus moving your character or whatever. Microphones aren't sensitive enough to pick up voice from ~1-2 ft away while having adequate noice filtration to filter out your mate talking to someone next to you and still be cheap.
Also its a given that you would have to have some button on the controller mapped to the mic else it would pick up every sound going, have the tv on loudish? Then you've just drowned out the person on the other end ^_^; this would then mean any game that wishes to use the mic would be down one button to do so. Ofc you could use it in a forum/chat kind of scenario before the game starts al lá MP: Hunters (I never could get the hang of that :P). For an example of this look at the mic on the DS, it works because you can bring the whole DS near to your mouth without altering gameplay that much.
I beleive the most logical option will be wireless headsets that work via bluetooth, the technology is out there, look at the earpieces used with mobile phones, they're dirt cheap now and the Wiimotes connect wirelessly with the console. This way you can have the mic near your mouth, still use the controller in the game without interruption and set the noise activation level for the mic or it could come with a button on the side that you can hold when you want to talk
Anyway those are just some of my many ideas, what do you all think?
P.S Just because the DS has a mic built in doesn't mean the Wii automatically has to have one I will be perfectly happy with a headset knowing that they haven't tried to cram a mic in just because they had one in a portable console.
P.P.S Yes the Gamecube had one but I beleive I've only ever seen one game that used it, by Koei I think? Some Kessen game? Anyway it was used to order your troops around, gimmicky and I read that it didnt always work that well as is the trouble with voice recognition software being unable to recognise strong accents but cést la vié.

you dont have to bring it up to your mouth for it to be clear. you could just play regularly and have it pick up you voice.

Great idea, but then people would have to buy another thing and program it into the Wii like they will with the Wiimotes

Having a HEADSET would be cool for online play .. and thats about it. Who cares if you would hear people cuss, be rude, etc. (you could turn it off...) plus its really funny listening to people react when you blow their head off.
It is highly unlikely that there will be one though, so im just going to wait until next month when more info is released. Pretty cool idea though...

I am almost positive that if there is a mic (which I really hope there will be), it will not be in the controller. Sure, all those other mics mounted to the controller, but those controlers weren't used by swinging them around; there may have been some motion, but only as a natural reaction and not very large. Putting the mic in the WiiMote would cause a lot of wind noise. I would see a headset as a very realy possibility, though. Also, look at the DS mic, it's not just for voice chat. In Nintendogs you use it to blow bubbles and balloons, and MarioKart you use for blowing up you balloons in a balloon battle.

I'm not sure whether this is in support of me or not, I assume it is as to me having someone hearing the person sitting next to me would be quite distracting, especially in coop games that rely on strategy and the bit in my quote that said about the noise filtration was relating to that point. Also if the game required voice activation then you'd be all like "Shhhh I'm trying to tell the game something"

I don't know how loud I was meant to shout but in that Rub rabbits game where you have to shout at the girl to get her to notice you in the club holding it in my lap just wasnt cutting it, maybe that was just me.

I agree with you their, it would be annoying to buy another accessory but then I may value money differently, if it was ~£20 then I'd think nothing of it, thats the price of a great quality skype mic I use with my laptop. I don't see the problem of registering it to your Wii, it shouldnt overlap the frequency of the controller or perhaps it could use a rotating frequency, I've never heard of bluetooth earpieces picking up cross-signals etc.

Yeah that's the game that's 2 games, not sure if they're off the top of your head but at the time of the gamecube I'm sure it was gimmicky but now it could probably be carried off better what with the success of the DS. Though my point about the accent issue still stands, I have what is described as a rather strong North East accent (England) I live near middlesborough, now are they going to have to program my accent in? I mean give the game to a scottish person and there you have a wildly different accent, give it to a geordie same again.
The games are going to be sold across eurpope, and I know that other laguages have the same related issues as english what with slight variations from province to province. I was in a fast food joint in spain one year and the people behind the counter couldnt understand each other at all :S was a bit weird to an outsider but I digress.
So either I'm missing something or any game is going to have to train itself and its commands to your voice which is finnicky, doesn't always work and when it does it often confuses itself. Trust me I know, I was watching my dyslexic uni mate train trying to train a voice program the uni gave him and it was completely terrible ^_^;
