I just picked up Okami as a rental yesterday. Honestly, it's awesome. It's extremely Japanese (with heavy influence from Japanese folklore and Shinto), but I'm guessing you know that. It really is an amazing game. Easily worth the 9.0 that IGN gave it.

It does feel very Zelda-esque, though. It's done so well that I don't mind, but there have been times when I thought: "Hey! Wind Waker!" or "Hey! Twilight Princess!"

It comes highly recommended.

Then again, I've enjoyed RE4, too. It can be very hard. It's also a game that keeps me always on the edge of my seat.

Personally, I enjoy Okami more... but both are games that belong in a "hardcore gamer's" catalog.

Capcom's been doing great things for Nintendo lately... I just wish their games would sell better.

Honestly, they're both winners... and it's a matter of your gaming preferences. I used to love Mario Kart (back on the SuperNES, especially), but I now prefer Smash Bros. by far. If online play is your thing, I would be tempted to recommend Mario Kart over Smash Bros.. If you like playing with other people locally, I would recommend Smash Bros.. If you do most of your gaming alone, I again recommend Smash Bros..

Smash Bros. has a ridiculous amount of stuff to unlock and too much replay value to even try to put into words.

Overall, I'm going to give Smash Bros. my recommendation (pick up the VC release of Mario Kart 64 for $10... and you get both experiences to some extent).
