After reading this, feel free to see the other side of the coin, the GAMES war

wondering which games to get? but dont know anything about them? read the article below, it may give you an idea which console is right for you this christmas

Quote:
Choosing the right console is one of the most important decisions of your life. So here's our Yule Tide guide to the three major contenders for your Christmas cash, their capabilities laid bare, their strengths probed and their weaknesses exposed.

PS3 Exposed!

PS3
Price
: $399 (£299) - $499 (£399)

After a troubled launch it's great to see that the PS3 is just as cool as and much more capable than its PlayStation predecessors. And of course the price cut really helps.

Need to know:
Confusingly, there are three models of PS3 - 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB - available at the moment. The 60GB model is being discontinued and may not be available in some areas already. The 40GB PS3 is the cheapest, but loses the media card ports, two USB slots and most significantly, backwards compatibility with PS2. We'd go for the superior 80GB model if you can afford it.

Key features:
High definition output
Plays Blu-ray discs, DVDs, CDs, MP3s
USB, Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity
Motion-sensing Sixaxis controller
Capable of running Linux
Built-in Wi-Fi

Online services:
No subscription charges
Communicate online with PlayStation Eye
PlayStation Store - download trailers, games, demos, wallpapers
Internet access
Extra costs/requirements: HDMI cable, broadband
Non essential extras: PlayStation Eye, Controller, HD-TV

The future
The PS3 is set when it comes to dealing with different types of media. It's currently lacking in the software department as there aren't enough knockout games coming out just for the PS3. The situation is likely to improve with the release of Metal Gear 4, Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet. Then there's the PlayStation Home, which looks like all the functionality of Xbox Live but set in virtual world.

What's to love:
+ Free online service
+ Built-in Blu-ray player
+ Not needing batteries for the pads
+ It's a big pulsing ball of techno-muscle - with massive potential
+ PSP connectivity
+ It can be used as a hard drive TV recorder with Play TV (out next year)
+ It's the most versatile machine when it comes to non-games entertainment

What's to hate:- Few great games exclusive to the PS3
- Difficult to develop for, resulting sometimes in weaker game performance
- Needing a HDTV to get the most out of it
- Lack of content on PlayStation Network compared to the Wii's Virtual Console and Xbox Live

Verdict
The PS3 is still in its infancy as a console and so can't really compete with the Wii and 360 when it comes to amazing exclusive games. But it's a machine with incredible capabilities and a bright future - with a role as a multimedia machine to be placed at the heart of your HD set up. Then with PlayStation Home and LittleBigPlanet out next year, the online service might even outshine Xbox Live.

It's the console for you if:
+ You want more out of your console than just gaming
+ You're prepared to wait for the PS3 to fulfill its potential
+ You want to become part of an online community (PlayStation Home) from day one

Wii Exposed!

Wii
Price:
$249 (£179)

Nintendo can look back on a great 2007 as thousands of DSs and Wiis flew off the shop shelves, but it wasn't just gamers that were spending their money as Nintendo has successfully grown the games market by targeting non-gamers, but with only Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros to come in terms of big franchises, can Nintendo continue getting the balance right between satisfying both the casual and hardcore market?

Need to know:
For the lowest price of the consoles, you get a Wii Remote and Nunchuk attachment, a sensor bar, component cable and Wii Sports. The biggest problem is where you get one. We're expecting severe Wii hardware shortages this Christmas.

Key Features:
Motion-sensing control system with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk
Backwards compatible with GameCube games and controllers
Supports connectivity with the DS

Online service:
Built-in Wi-Fi Connection
Internet Channel - surf the web using Opera web browser
Virtual Console - download NES, SNES, Genesis (Mega Drive) and N64 games
News, weather and photo swapping services
Extra costs/requirements: Broadband connection
Non essential extras: Remote and Nunchuk, Classic controller, SD Memory Card

The future
With Nintendo continuing to use all their ingenuity and creativity to make amazing new experiences, the far future is looking great. The near future isn't as pretty - after Mario Galaxy there's not much in terms of big brand names. The console will continue to sell well, however, especially with Wii Music and Wii Fit just around the corner as more 'new' gamers are lured in, but these aren't hardcore game experiences. The good news is that the online service will just go from strength to strength with the Check Mii Out and Gift Giving Channel as well as the wonderful WiiWare option that will allow you to download completely new games as opposed to the retro classics you get on the Virtual Console at the moment.

What's to love:
+ Innovative approach - a completely new way of interacting with games
+ Price
+ Attractive to people who haven't played games before
+ Social gaming aspect, particularly games like Wii Sports
+ Amazing exclusive game line up including Mario, Zelda and Metroid
+ Good online service - particularly Virtual Console for getting classic games

What's to hate:- No conventional games with conventional controls
- Graphically inferior to the PS3 and 360, and it's not High Def
- Not a multimedia machine - won't play DVDs or MP3s
- Most limited online service for multiplayer gaming
- 512 MB of memory - not much room to store downloads and no hard drive

Verdict
The Wii is an incredible new experience unlike anything seen before in gaming. It's fantastic at luring in non-gamers. So if you're tired of the usual types of games, want something different or are after a console the whole household can play, the Wii is for you.

It's the console for you if:
+ You just have to play Mario and Zelda
+ You like playing in your front room with friends
+ You're tired of the regular types of games and want something new

LAST BUT NOT LEAST.....

Quote:
Xbox 360 Exposed!

Xbox 360
Price:
$279 (£179) - $449 (£299)

The 360 should be celebrating a very successful 2007, with sales growing and a slew of great exclusive games. Unfortunately the Red Ring of Death problem (a hardware fault where the lights around the power button light up to indicate a busted machine) reared its ugly head as many gamers returned their console to Microsoft for repair - leading to an irritating wait for it to be returned again. So a mixed 12 months…

Need to know:
There are three models available: Core (no hard drive, wired pad) - $279 (£179), Premium (20GB hard drive, wireless pad) - $349 (£249), and Elite (120GB hard drive, wireless pad, black) - $449 (£299). We'd recommend going for a Premium machine everything being equal. You'll want a hard drive to get the most out of Xbox Live and play games like GTA IV but the Elite model is a bit of a stretch for storage space you don't really need.

Key Features:
HD output
Plays progressive scan DVDs, CDs, MP3s
Detachable 20GB/120GB hard drive

Online services:
Xbox Live anywhere - communicate with other Microsoft powered formats
Windows Live messenger
Download games from Xbox Live Arcade
Communication with headset and Xbox Live Vision
Extra costs/requirements: Broadband Live, Xbox Live Gold membership
Non Essential extras: HDTV, Wireless headset, Xbox 360 Wireless Bridge, Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, Xbox Live Vision, extra controller

The future
At the moment there's very little to look forward to in terms of amazing new features, but can it actually get much better? The next step is to turn it into a multimedia machine with the release of the HD DVD drive and with plans for a TV recording feature. Microsoft will also be keen to develop an equivalent to the PS3's forthcoming Home online community-based service.

What's to love:
+ Stronger games line-up than the other two consoles
+ Great online service
+ Excellent downloadable content - games, demos, trailers and more
+ Multimedia machine - you can play DVDs (HD DVDs if you buy the add on) and CDs, making it the heart of your home entertainment
+ Developers are finding it relatively easy to develop for, which means it will continually get top third-party games, which could well be 'better' versions

What's to hate:- Unreliability. The Red Ring of Death means you could be without your machine for a few weeks as Microsoft fixes it
- Lack of support from Japan - it isn't the console for you if you like Japanese-style games
- Power adapter is really fat and the DVD drive noisy
- Lack of in-built Wi-Fi - it needs an adapter
- Needing a HDTV to get the most out of it

Verdict
Out of the three consoles, the 360 is the one enjoying the best quality line-up at the moment. Not only does it receive the best of third-party games such as Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty 4, but with Project Gotham, Halo and Mass Effect it has essential games you can't play anywhere else. The 360 is definitely the console for gamers who want everything NOW and are prepared to overlook some of the potential technical difficulties.

It's the console for you if:
+ You want to play the best conventional games out there
+ You're keen to get involved in online gaming
+ You're after the cheapest way into HD gaming

christmas is right around the corner, so like i said in the title......choose wisely......

Yes yes all very good and well, but you didn't specify many games, just consoles. And for those getting games, this might be useful.
Wii.

"won't play DVDs or MP3s"

i disagree with this, the Wii can play MP3 songs you just need to put it in your memory card thing from your computer or w/e

Its pretty simple. the $400 PS3 lacks a shitload so no one wants that piece of crap. 80GB is where its at, problem is its $600. So you have cheap Wii, you basically get what you pay for, or Cheaper than PS3 but still better than PS3.

You dont pick from 360 or Wii, instead you buy both for a $350 Xbox that is currently coming with 2 games (Forza+Ultimate Alliance) and Wii that is $250. $350+$250 = $600.

1 Console vs 2 Consoles
Playstation 3 $600 vs $600 Wii60

The Winner is!?! Wii + Xbox 360 Aka Wii60!!

But can you play that music while playing? PS3 and Xbox can. It even lowers the volume of the music when it needs to.

Not for much longer. In the next two weeks Nintendo is removing this support and adding AAC support. Stupid move but its happening.

Although Wii is the best, I think the 360 will come out on top due to Wii shortages.
