Having picked it up yesterday, I have decided the following:
  • It looks really good
  • It's a hell of a lot of fun
  • I like the wheel and can't wait until we can buy the wheel separate without the game so I can get 3 more
  • I suck at it and need to play a lot more
  • I'm too embarrassed at how bad I am to share my FC with anyone
I know what I'm doing tonight though!

There are lots of good racers online, but even if you're at the back you can pummel them with shells and weapons

If you have a good last lap you can usually weave your way into the points. Just get scared if you ever find yourself in first place!

I like hanging onto a banana on the back of the cart in case anybody tries any sneaky rear attacks...

You know you want to. *glare*

I've only used the wheel once and then went back to the nunchuk... Then I decided that wasn't all that great so I'm stuck with the Gamecube controller. I picked up so damn habits from the DS version though, I keep reaching for Y to shoot items. Fael. D:

I'm trying to get up to 9000, it'll never happen though. xD
I just like the period where all the crap Americans are using the wheel and I can get way up there with the points. Hell yes!

When I first started I also kept pressing "x" for items and ended up getting the camera view from the front. That was slightly frustrating. I'm at 7500, I've got a bit to go to get 9000.

Emma I'm having trouble beating your Rainbow Road time! ><

Part of the reason I like the wheel might be because this is my first Mario Kart. I don't have habits ingrained in me from older-style controllers. I might try the nunchuk+remote a bit more but I am not convinced.

Oh... and I hate some of the tracks. A lot.

Emma, you just want my MK FC so you can laugh at me publicaly in the forums. You can't fool me... I know your intentions aren't innocent!

There's only two things wrong with this game:

The Wii Wheel is too hit or miss. It's fun to use, but I won't rely on it.
The new mini turbo for drifting is too simple and takes NO skill.
Some of the new maps feel recycled (DK Summit).

So after playing it your previous reservations are gone? Good .. .. I'm glad that you're enjoying it.

After exclusively using the wheel, then trying the wiimote / nunchuk combination I agree that the wheel isn't as accurate but .. .. .. when I play using the wheel I feel more 'connected' to the action .. .. the w /n combination feels somehow remote.

The mini turbo is designed that way to prevent 'snaking'. There is still skill in timing the release of the boost, but not as much skill is required as in MKDS.

Being not a huge fan of the Mario Kart series... I got it yesterday and love it!

Most maps are cool, haven't unlocked all of them, heard there is 30+.

Overall, I'd give it a 9/10, 1 off because of control issues (at least getting used to it) and blue shell.... which I think is a bit cheap!

Technically snaking was in double dash, as there's that one video of the guy doing it on Mario Circuit, but that's a moot point.

I don't know what these developers did differently then HAL, but this works online quite well. Maybe its an issue with items in Brawl? I honestly have no clue. I'm sure the graphics help with the frame rate, too.

That was half my problem with the wheel, trying to do the old fashioned drift. That and I can barely control it with the wheel too, where as with a Wavebird, I can drift through that first big turn in Mario Circuit keeping on the inner edge without a hitch and do another drift before the chain chomp.

They've introduced a seperate Mari Kart Wii channel that can be accessed whether the disc is in or not. This channel will allow you to view online leader boards for each track, and tell you where those players are located.
It will allow you to download a player's ghost data and race against it. It will allow you to watch actual online races on your Wii. It will allow you to enter a lobby and start a race with random people. It will allow you to register your friends so you can see if they're online making it easier to start a race with them. And it supports limited text chatting. (Actually it's more like emoting in an MMO)

Now with all those online features, the one thing I keep reading and hearing about is, "Boy the graphics on Mario Kart Wii look pretty bad." It's like people are determinded to be dissatisfied with Nintendo no matter what they do.

What? Nintendo has explored some new online features in one of their games? Well the graphics still suck so I'm not gettin' that game. (MK Wii)

What? Nintendo has released a game that has some of the best visuals we've ever seen? Nearly every gaming publication agrees that the graphics on this game are phenomenal? Well that game aint got no online so I aint gettin' it. (Metroid Prime 3).

AMENNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree, great post!

I too suck at it, though having not played the prior versions ... I guess that's to be expected.

I was impressed/happy with the online play, smooth, easy, and plenty fun. Overall - that's what I take away from this game ... so fun it's addicting to play. Whatever commentary on graphics/etc ... I could care less, as I have so much fun playing the game.

Even despite losing my fair share of online .... I had an absolute riot playing it yesterday and can't wait until tonight as well.

Very happy I picked it up.

Lying through the internet doesn't really work once they don't know you're a blonde Catholic girl who went to a girls' school. Damnit, my innocence!

Pete! I'm actually having trouble beating my Rainbow Road time, it's annoying me because ti was my first try and I was only trying to beat the staff ghost data. I'm trying to get over that 3;44 from the frickin' expert ghost.

Other than that, I'm trying to get into the 1;15 range on the Luigi Circuit. The track I absolutely despise.

Haha.

I'll practice MK a lot tonight and see what happens. Who knows... maybe Emma will take my friend-code virginity.

We got an extra wheel at Toys R Us yesterday for $10. It was the official Wii version, same as the one that came with MK. The Sunday paper also showed Best Buy and Circuit City having them as well!
