defensive moves in mario kart

how do you defend against green and red shell attacks, or isit just luck that stops you getting blasted?

You can shoot things like bananas and other shells back at them(The shell work espesciely well)

You can hold green shells or bananas behind you. I think you shift the analog stick back and hold the item button. That is how it's been in previous MK's.

Yes, and do everything possible to stay striaght while you do this. That way your cart will be best shielded by a banana or shell. If you're turning or in the midst of a power skid, you'll get side-swiped by the incoming shell.
