Having Problem with Guitar Hero 3 multiplayer

Hi-

Hope someone can help. I cannot get my second guitar to show up in the multiplayer mode. I've tried both guitars with a single controller, but once I connect the second controller to either of the guitars, the LED goes out in the wii remote. Help or any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
