I prefer using the wheel. I bought plenty of steering wheel accessories for other consoles in the past in the hope that they would increase the driving realism but usually they failed, so it suprised me that the Wii wheel worked better than anything i had before.
I use a Gamecube controller when playing with friends as I only have one wheel and I let them have the fun of using it but for single player I always use the wheel.

I like to use the Gamecube controller
- The Wheel I found to hard to control and use on turns, using weapons, and doing willies.
Gamecube all the way - Classic feel just like in Double Dash!

i'd say the addition of the wii wheel was a very good idea. It add's a certain appeal to the game.

The Wii Wheel is fun for goofing around with, but to be competitive in any way, shape, or form, I rely on the Wiimote/Nunchuk combo.

just bought this 3 days ago, it has a lot of positive stuff, awesome online gaming, more characters and vehicles etc, only thing that sucks is battle mode in teams, and i think items are overrated...

I use the wheel & have no problem with it. It's easy to use & when you want to shoot a weapon, they've made it real easy using the 'B" button which is at the back on the wheel.

I am a free holdin' wiimote maniac. I love driving with the feel of a steering wheel. Last week I heard about someone modding a balance board to handle analog gas and brakes. That would be really cool. Analog steering and analog gas and brakes. I hope someone at Nintendo reads this and uses the balance board for additional input for driving games.

I believe the GameCube controller is easier to use. Although you have to momentarily take your thumb off the joystick to do tricks, it doesn't really affect you that much. The Wii Wheel is fine, but I prefer the GameCube controller for online races.

I am a 100% WiiWheel user. I guess I'm faily good, I am around 7200 VR... I haven't even bothered to try out the other setups. I love the Wheel too much

I like wii wheel and wiimote nunchuck. I'd say I'm better with wiimote nunchuck but I use wii wheel for fun, but never for online.

for me, the wiimote alone is hard to play with :/ that's why the steering wheel is cool for me.

Started out with the wheel so that is all we know. If you are racing, then you need a wheel.
I'm in it for the fun of it, so the wheel works best. No use really being hardcore about the game as you cannot taunt anyone since there is no mic. I pay no attention to anyone's stats but my own.

i only got the game on sunday so have only played with the wheel but i love it. it is a LOT more responsive than i thought it would be.
I had go online after having a 100% 1st place in mushroom cup on my 2nd go and my best result was 4th. i thought that was pretty good considering i hadnt played any of the tracks that were used. most of them had some pretty decent VR too.
one thing i have noticed tho is that you cant do tricks on some of the jumps, for example in the shopping mall track there are some fountains and it wont do tricks off them.

Driving games should use wheels, but I agree that some people prefer to use the controller. I have used both the standard floating wheel and a fixed based wheel and they both worked well. It's down to personal preference I think. I must say I was suprised how responsive the game picked up the wheels movements.
