Official Mario Kart Controller Discussion Thread
Before we get too many controller threads or what people prefer etc., from now on people should use this thread to ask questions, say concerns whatever it may be.

Thanks for making this thread..
I've read a number of different reviews concerning Mario Kart and the addition of the Wii Wheel peripheral, and I've found people either love it or they hate it. On one end, the wheel truly levels the playing field and allows for more casual gamers to play "competitively" against the more "hardcore" population. On the other hand, I've noticed that many people dislike how the Wii version of Mario Kart has been oversimplified for the same reasons.
Personally, I like what they've done with Mario Kart and with adding the Wii Wheel to the lineup. I like having friends over who don't play as many video games as I do, and having the races end up pretty close.
Of course, with the option of the GC controller and the Classic controller, I'll have a chance against better players online.. though I wish there was an option that would allow you to play against only players using the Wheel.
So far, Mario Kart is shaping up to be a great addition to my library.. but don't get me started on the absence of Free-for-All Battle Mode.

How does Mario Kart know if someone is using the wheel or not? It doesn't plug into the controller or anything of that sort...

the classic controller is by far the best set of controlls for this game.....im gonna make a clock out of my Wii wheel
Although Im still alittle confused about the difference between "manual" and "automatic" Do i have to shift in manual? I also noticed that steering is a lot easier in automatic...Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yes, that's true jondeak...it's because automatic drifts for you without having to jump or anything...I don't use it as I like to be mroe in control of how I drift...
And inferno10, if there's nothing plugged into the wii remote then it'll take it as the wii wheel, even though you may just be using the remote without the wheel.

Using the wheel while on Manual.. is so much better,,, you def have more control... and think of it this way.... what is the fun of wii without some virtual game play./.... IMO everything you can do on a remote you can do it on the wheel.. it just takes a little much of getting used to it.... I vote the wii wheel......
But in the end,... who cares what you use.. just as long as you enjoy playing... and you roast people on-line...

It shows on top of their head by displaying a wheel. If they aren't using a wheel, it shows nothing.
Edit: You pick the control setup, it predicts what you are using from there.

If you use the wheel as your online control method for more than a certain % of the time then it shows a golden wheel next to your name. You have to have competed for a minimum amount before it will show up.
I don't know what either the % or the minimum time are though.

I got my gold wheel by beating some of the time trials and unlocking expert ghost data in there. unless it was some freaky coincidence thats how it works.

I love the wheel. Do not want to go backwards and use old controllers. I stick with the mote and nunchuck for SSBB as well.
The thing I still get confused when drifting. I forgot I have to move the wheel too... and I just push the pad and B button... then I crash
The thing I do not like (kinda off topic) from the game is Bowser is lighter than normal and the CPU uses too many damn spiny shells... I hate them.

I wish I had never used the Nunchuck now because the wheel is so much fun, but after playing 80% of my driving with the Nunchuck (according to my game stats) I can't use the wheel worth shit

I have played every single mario kart soon after each one was released, and this one is awesome!
I use the wheel, simply because it is something new and fun.
I even bought a 2nd wheel so the wife will play together with me. Surprisingly, she really like the game too!
It is pretty obvious, that at least to start, people are going to be more used to (and better with) the classic type controls, and not be as good with the wheel. But with some time, wheel players will be just as good.

What are your options as far as the controls? I figured that the wheel just kind of held it and was fun. I haven't bought it yet but I have a lot of friends over all the time and I have four controllers, two nunchuks.
I assumed that if you didn't use the wheel, you could just hold the controller sideways, is that the case or do you need to use the nunchuks as well?
