if you're playing with someone that's on your friends list is it possible to have 12 people in the race, or no?

obviously i'm referring to mario kart. =]

Yes. Start up a continental or world match. Your friend can then join that by selecting friend roster and then clicking on your Mii and selecting "join friend".
