I totally agree, if you go online you'll find yourself in 2nd, then hit with a green shell, then hit by an oncoming bullet bill, then hit by a star. It takes far too long to recover from items, I think that's the biggest difference in the game. Like when you get hit with the blue shell, your kart sits there for like 5 secs till it gets going again. The red shells are now able to go over jumps, that's incredibly stupid.
I agree with Lewi that this guy is totally flattering himself but everything (else) he said was a good point. Just like Strikers Nintendo has made yet another game with the items and specials deciding the game. Oh but I guess I should keep the wii so I can buy another game like the two above. I hope they don't mess up again.

This game was geared for everyone. The game for me is does have some flaws like getting battered by a barrage of blue and red shells at the finish line, i think we have all experienced it but overall it's fun. Skilled racers will win most of the races but will get "unlucky" from time to time but if you use the items wisely you will win more than you lose. Zerolazer still get the game it is a lot of fun!

i was born in '85, and i, like you edcoche, was fortunate enough to grow up in an video game era that allowed quality gaming with games such as DK Country, Super Mario World 3, Mario Kart, Mario 64, and OoT. nostalgia is always great, and looking back to when times were awesome certainly makes for a good time and a pleasant summer afternoon with some friends.

but what one needs to understand, however, is that times change, and what people value and look for in games change as well. i feel that just because the games of this generation have changed from games of old, it doesn't mean that they've gotten worse (or better, for that matter). in my opinion, you can't judge games in comparison to its predecessors; it just isn't fair. if, for example, your children (future or present) nag you up and down about how your taste in music is horrible, is it really horrible or do they just have different tastes? did the musicians of your time really suck, or are the styles of contemporary musicians just different from your generation?

my point is that it is difficult to judge a game's quality based on its predecessor; two games in two different genres are bound to be, well, different. try to remember that the species that eventually becomes extinct is the same species that does not learn to adapt to its new environment (and this is in no way a threat).

No one is talking about how much fun the battle mode is online with 12 friends. I think its a blast! and you dont have to worry about the rubber band effect in racing.
Oh and since the original poster made it important to tell everyone how old you are, lets just say that i was alive in 1981, but still a twinkle in 1979.

I'm starting to agree with this guy actually there really is way to much luck involved for it to be good enough for competative racing online.

I still like the game though.

Right now I'm taking a break from the frustrating online and beating all the cups.

What pisses me off about the game mostly is the complete and absolute unfairness of the game. It really is out of control. Yes, I am familiar with the concept of mario kart. At almost any given moment you are one 'box' gift away from remaining in the back of the pack or taking over a top place. It's crazy that you can have a flawless run and then be bombed with a blue shell that all of the sudden puts you in 8th place or worse for the run.

The controls are horrid.

Regardless of that, my life is not ruined. I am now a 26 y/o--as of last week, and I am used to things not going as planned (or expected,) I make 60K plus annually (so far) on zero debt, I am in phenomenal physical condition, I bang model quality girls on a regular basis, and life is generally good. I am just pissed that my nostalgic roots cannot be satisfied to the extent that I wish they could be in regards to my mario kart tastes.
Well i'm older than you so i guess that gives me rightful judgement on this topic. To be honest, graphics have always been a draw. They may not have looked as good in the 80s but there were still games that made you go 'wow' such as Starfox or DK Country on the Snes. Heck i remember seeing Space Invaders in the arcade for the first time and thinking that nothing could ever top those graphics!

Mario Kart has always had the one 'box' away from first or last place concept. I really don't find this one much different and part of the skill is to choose your moment to break away or catch up. It works both ways too, as i've had a few races where i've gone from 10th to 1st on the last couple of corners and some where i've gone from 1st to 5th. Still dosen't seem much worse to me than hitting someone with lightning on N64s Wario Stadium though.

Controls seem great to me, more fluid than the Snes or NGC versions (although the N64 was my favorite). I'm not that keen on the bikes but i cannot fault the karts, maybe you just need more practice or try using a different control setup.

If you really need to do some nostalgic karting then there is always the VC.

iv been playing mario kart since snes mario kart (wasnt around for release of snes one, but started playing it from age of 3, then N64 (probably best) then DD then DS and now this and this is my fave af the 3 neer ones,

its not harder to evade red shells, and blues shells were in DS and dd aswell

just if your in first and you hear one, then slow down,/ stop, you might be luck enough for 2nd place to catch up and get hit to, or even better them over take you.

i agree its slighlty to casual now, but most of us have dealt with it, so how comes you cant, but one thing i think is this new one, has a less casual boost system, the annoying (must skid corners to make them) pisses me off, i use manual, because auto is to easy, but its still annoying.

the only weapon i hate is the POW block, its just pointlessly annoying.

blues shells are etremely annoying on short tracks but i can deal.

and would you prefer it if you could get any weapon disregarding of position?

like if you were last and got bananas while first place got a bullet bill?

seems like with the wii, nintendo's just been dumbing down once-great titles to fit the needs of the noobs.

This iteration does not suck at all. All it takes is some getting used to and mastering the controls. I've been hit with MANY blue shells and lightning and red shells and all that during a single race and have always managed to maintain the lead, so it's clearly not the game but the player.

The one and only complaint about this new mario kart game though, is that you cannot hold on to an item when you release it. Like with the bananas or green/red shells, you used to be able to hang them off the back of your kart until you're ready to use them, but in this one they just take off immediately. If there IS a way to do it, then I really need to know because it would certainly make it easier to deflect on coming attacks.

yeah, man, you can hold the item behind you by simply holding the trigger button and not letting go. if you simply press the trigger button when you have the item, it'll instantly fire; if you hold the button down while you race, however, the item will stay behind you. good luck!

I bought the game 2 days ago, played it for 2 days straight and now I dont even want to play it anymore :P. I do not feel anything for winning/losing as the game is based way too much on luck. To be honest I only bought the wii for super smash brothers.
