Capcom: Monster Hunter 3 "Looks Amazing"
Quote:
I recently got into Capcom's Monster Hunter games. So far, the series has scratched my proverbial itch for dino slayin', armor craftin' and loot whorin'. Though the release of certain monster titles as well as other handheld RPGs have stalled my exploration of the franchise, I'm still super psyched about Monster Hunter 3 for the Wii, and am even moreso now that some initial, albeit entirely vague, reports from Capcom US are saying that the game is living up to its pedigree.
Fielding questions from fans about MH3, Capcom community manager Seth Killian remarked on his recent peek at the game.
"I saw an a non-final build when I was in Osaka recently and it already looks amazing," he said.
Asked whether "looks amazing" means the graphics or otherwise, Killian said: "I was impressed by every part of the game." No mention of control schemes, online content, or otherwise.
Nintendo's coup of the previously Sony-exclusive franchise might not mean much here in the States where its popularity is decidedly niche, but its significance can't be understated in a country where Wiis sell faster than bibles and Monster Hunter 2nd Portable G just recently shipped 2 million copies. That Capcom guys are talking about MH3 with its Stateside fans could just be nice community interaction, or it could hint at a possible release on English-speaking shores, which, all things considered, would seem more than likely to me.

The game might be really cool. My friend who moved a while back said he was going to get whatever next gen console had this game. He wasn't a Nintendo fan though so he probably bought a 360 or ps3 by now.
I'm surprised it's coming out on the Wii.

This looks like something I could really get into. Awesome that it's a Wii exclusive!
Anyone play the earlier ones? Opinions?

holy crap, this actually looks really good!
haha, the title reminds me of "Monster Rancher" though, which probably explains why i'm surprised by the game's high quality.

What's it play like? Is it epic and strategic like Shadows of Colossus or is it a button mashing hack and slash?

it's VERY VERY strategic. lots of inventory managing and meticulously scrutinizing over little detail. Looking at what missions you are planning to take on and what you will need to do in order to complete the mission.
You have to harvest things from either animals or specific locations in order to build better armor, weapons or simply trade/barter for other things. What you wear plays a part in it too, like if you're in a hot area and you're wearing a lot of thick warm clothing, your stamina will drop quickly. Same if you're in the cold mountains and you don't have enough clothes on. There's ALOT to strategize, and on top of all that when they say monster HUNTER they really mean HUNTER. You need to bring the correct weapons and stalk your prey, doing your best to sneak up on it. You definitely don't want to try and hack and slash in this game, because that is a sure way to lose.
This game is AWESOME for people who love deep deep RPG/Adventures. But if you don't like that kind of stuff you'll surely get frustrated quickly, especially because the controls are kind of quirky and take a while to get used to. In particular the larger, heavy weapons take a while to get the timing right because they take the weight into account and it takes a while for the character to swing it.
I have Monster Hunter 2 for PSP and it was the first time I ever played MH. It's really fun, but you really have to grind in order to get a good and powerful hunter. I can't wait until the Wii Monster Hunter because I just know it's going to be much better looking, and a much larger game as well being that it's a console game and will have more room for such things. Another thing that I'm going to look forward to is having a controller to hunt with rather than trying to use the little PSP thing.

It's not out in Japan either. They hinted that it would definitely not hit US/Japan in 2008.
Monster Hunter hit PS2 many years ago. It flopped in the US and non of the sequels (2 or G) got released.
Monster Hunter Freedom(remake of 1), Freedom2(remake of 2), 2nd G(remake of G) all hit PSP in Japan and are huge. Freedom 1&2 hit PSP in the US and still are not huge, but finally have a cult following in the US. I think these all have ad-hoc local-wi fi play and the only way to play them on the NET is to use a PC and a program like Xlink KAI.
The PS2 games actually had servers and you could play them online. I think they were free like Phantasy Star Online was on Dreamcast.
The Wii game will definitely have online, I just hope there is no monthly fee to play online. Even if there is, you can still play it offline like Phantasy Star Online into infinity.

i knew about those ones for the handhelds, what pissed me off is that the PS2 version didn't hit the states, or so i thought. I used to watch videos of it and ask a friend of mines from Venezuela about it, and if he could import it to the states for me. never knew that it was here, and had no following??
wow, no taste. oh well, it's coming to wii!!! but not in 2008

I almost broke down and got a PSP...but then Tri got announced for Wii!!!
I could not believe Nintendo secured such a hardcore game!!!
Personally, I think the Wii version will be the best because they will streamline the controls and make it easier to play. I am not one of those who think complex controls necessarily make a game deeper. It's why Europeans praise Gothic(PC) and most Americans despise it and choose Oblivion/Morrowind over it.

Oblivion/Morrowind would have been fun if i were younger and had the time to play it. i just discovered gothic about 2 months ago, and don't really want to play anymore RPGs unless theyre from a series that i love that hasn't gone too commercial or it's a multimplayer RPG(not necessarily MMO).
but yeah, i can't wait for monster hunter! some complex controls would be a plus IMO though
