You have to play. There must be some competition on your friends list. It's annoying how many people I have and hardly any of them play, and you were there frequently. Blah.

You are right... items are nice, but the CPU uses it insanely (the blue shell) and it's really bothering.

My life as a King is getting my Mario Kart dusty... cuz I get mad with Mario Kart all time with the stupid blue shell, the crazy amount of pows and that stupid cloud with a lighting (I get it from boxes when I'm 1st) Along with red shells...

In addition, bowser takes ages to get speed (like on all games) and it's a bigger pita... And no... I'm not even thinking about in giving up Bowser. I beat the Mirror mode on all previous MKs with him. Never used other character... never... even not for one lap.

Well to each his/her own I suppose.

For me, when I first started MK Wii I felt the same ... I was pretty ticked off that I was getting lambasted and hit by multiple items while in the lead, but I've become used to it. If I lose some VR due to some bad luck, no big deal because I've been in the same boat (nothing boosts your spirits than seeing that blue shell fly past you as you avoid the explosion and take first). Other times I'm so far in the lead that I can literally get hit with a couple of those blue shells and shake them off.

Parts of Mario Kart are definitely geared to people who don't want to get wasted with items, and that's Time Trials. Why not download some ghosts and earn some top rankings?

No problem - I personally love time trials.

One thing to remember, though, is even if there aren't items in games like Need for Speed (and probably Speed Racer, though I've never played it so I could be wrong) they usually have some sort of internal 'cheating' mechanism involved such as letting NPC players or people in the back drive faster to catch up to the lead cars.

Personally I'd rather have items level the playfield than have the losing cars be given super speed + super handling to keep things interesting.
