Do you use manual drifting or automatic drifting in Mario Kart Wii? I prefer automatic since it's more simplistic. However, if it was manual shifting, then I would opt for it.

Automatic makes no sense unless you're a complete noob, since you do not get boosts with drifts, which are the main reasons for drifting. Always set to manual.
I don't know why everyone associated automatic and "noobs." Can someone explain this to me? For me using automatic is more accurate than manual, boosts or not. I compensate for the boosts using a quick accelerating bike...it's called tactics, is there something wrong with that? I still don't see how pressing 1 extra button makes the game more exciting.

Boosts. Period. You only get boosts with manual, and they make a huge difference. And automatic isn't any more precise as long as you have even decent skill with manual (which can be acquired in maybe 30 minutes of play). Automatic is solely for non-gamers who are picking up the game for the first time.
No offense. Just try manual, and you'll see the difference.

I've been playing Mario Kart since the N64 days and have a VR of 8,000. Automatic only for non-gamers...I beg to differ.

I also use Automatic and I beat everyone I play (however, I've yet to play online). I consider myself pretty good, and I don't believe Manual necessary to win. It's just another option like Wavedashing is in Super Smash Bros.

Just let me be the first to tell you playing online is way more challenging then playing the computer. However back on point, Manual 100%
I do quite well with automatic and I'm at 7000+ VR. I can use manual, been there and done it. The "slight" boost you get from manual doesn't really give you much advantage as you end up sliding more than automatic on the corners, unless you are THAT good and precise, IMO
I use automatic. I usually come in 5th-1st place using automatic. I don't like the manual drifting because I find it a little bit harder to concentrate on the race. Plus, boosts don't really do me any good.
