there's always potential of anything homebrew bricking your hardware...that's the problem with homebrew. Because it's not official you never know what you're getting, so somebody might forget to properly code something one time and the hardware doesn't quite understand what to do when it gets to that mistake while processing and just freezes.
So, good rule of thumb about homebrew software, is that if it's very popular then it's more than likely safe to use, but if you've never heard of it or it's relatively unknown then there's a bigger risk you might have issues with it. But there's yet to be any homebrew that 100% risk-free. Not until they give out free official developers tools with everything we buy.

Is is possible that Nintendo would release an update that could brick all wiis with homebrew installed? And in order to play games online the latest wii firmware should be installed right? So if one version of wii firmware bricks homebrewed wiis, I would not be able to play online anymore if my wii had homebrew installed?

Well, you do know that Nintendo warns you everytime you upgrade that "any intstallation of an un-official product.... blahblah, when you upgrade, it may cause inproper opperation....blahblah."
BTW, don't do any modding or homebrewing ever!!!!!!

Why would you want to? Is it for lag hacking? Is it to illegally play VC games on your Wii? Nintendo WILL brick your console if you violate the user agreement. Microsoft and Sony will show equal lack of mercy on any hackers/modders/politicians looking for an easy buck. Death to all hackers, I see enough of them in Mario Kart lag hacking their way to first with no skill at all.

anything's possible, but i think it seriously unlikely nintendo, or any other company would do anything to incapacitate your system. they might go so far as not allowing your games to work or something with an error message saying "We have detected homebrew please remove it..." something like that but nobody would ever brick their customers property.

You underestimate the corporate giant, Nintendo. They may not go as far as making the Wii inoperable, but they will remove it and make any saved games (twilight hack) unusable.

Don't underestimate what a big company will do when you threaten their profit. Microsoft banned one player for hacking into Halo 3 beta. His ban sentence was until the year 9999 A.D. Nintendo has also been known to delete Wii data when it detects hacks. All those Mario Kart hackers will get theirs soon. Well at least the ones that use blatent lag hacking. I went from 2nd to 8th in one race for simply staying behind the lag hacking leader. Freaking BS!

i just want to get the homebrew channel to run some media player stuff on it...either way nintendo only sees the homebrew channel if anything because everything else is stored on the sd card...i just hope when installing it, my wii doesn't brick, i'd be SOOOOOOOOO pissed off because I can't afford another one, and on top of that, if I get banned from online, fine... but I don't want to get bricked ya know?

Yea,homebrew is something you don't want to fool around with and Nintendo has there consequences for doing illegal things violating there User Agreement,I don't blame them though hacking or any of the sort is not a good thing to do. As sagema said:
"Don't underestimate what a big company will do when you threaten their profit."
If you get bricked,or any of the sort,I have no pity for you.

Yeah I'd like it for the mp3 player, the import boot loader, and all the other cool mini programs i found online. And it's only software so its not illegal and doesn't void the warranty, so I'm really considering installing it. I just need to get another copy of twilight princess... I sold mine :-(

just rent it... it's really easy to do, but do it quick befor ehe twilight hack gets disabled again...
you load the zelda game normal on your wii, go through the cutscenes. you copy the HBC file to the root of an sdcard. make a folder called apps in it as well. Load zelda, load the special save on the sd card from within the game, walk backwards, ignore the warning since it's been tested and still works, then install it and when it's done it'll reboot the wii on it's own and then it's there... put all your apps in the apps folder on your sd card and be sure they're in individual folders and all named boot.dol or boot.elf
That's it.

awesome thanks! I'm trying to get in contact with one of my little brothers friends to borrow it, but I'm not really in a rush. I'm pretty sure every time Nintendo tries to stop the hack from working, someone will fix it or find a way around it.
But does anyone know if formatting the system memory on the wii removes all traces of the homebrew channel? I'm not worried just curious. I know I read that there will always be logs of the channel being installed, but does formatting remove these logs or no?

No one has had any problems with the homebrew channel as of yet.
If you do it correctly, nothing should go wrong, but once you do so, Nintendo is no longer responsible and your warranty is void.

Technically, to my understanding at least, the warranty is not void because there has been no hardware modification. Installing the Homebrew channel is just like popping in any old disc.

I believe warranty shouldn't be voided because no physical modification was done to the wii. They will find an excuse tho, that's usually how it works. As for nintendo bricking your wii... legally they can't do something to make your system not function, just like with the xbox... modchipped boxes are banned from live, but they can't brick your system because it's against the law. So everything should be ok... I just hope they don't make an update one day that causes it to brick by "accident" haha. I know the twilight hack was removed tho, but the channel still worked, and then they fixed the hack so it still works with the newest menu. I dunno... all I know is it's easy to install and all that. I'm not installing any .wads tho... since that's the VC games and stuff... I'm gonna stick to the homebrew channel so if they do see whats on it they just see the homebrew channel, not their own pirated channels. Everything else is on my sd card and technically it'd be illegal for them to view the contents of my sd card which doesn't have anything to do with their end user agreement. The homebrew channel by itself on the wii doesn't mean piracy, so they can't really do much.
