I would like to get my brother-in-law a flight game for Christmas. He is over 50 and I believe he bought one of the first flight games that came out for the Wii. The game he got is one of those that didn't get a great review.

What is out now and what would people recommend?

BTW, he uses Link's Crossbow Training as stress relief when he gets home from work, if that helps with the recommendation.

I just wanted to get in on this thread cuz I'd love to know a good flying game for my dad too. He flies a small Cessna in real life so loves anything to do with planes! He has a PS2 at home but often comes over to play Wii at my house.

I know it's not a flying game, but he really seemed to like Metroid Prime 3. If your BIL likes shooting (i.e. Link) he might get a kick out of that, if you can't find any flying games with good reviews. Very well-done game: nice graphics, good use of the controls, fun adventure, and of course, shooting.

I tried MP3, I don't think he would be into that much. Maybe the new COD:World at War.

Is there a flying game for the Wii yet? Seems a major untouched genre.

*does a quick search*

There's some flight-action war games, but no "flight simulators" per se. And none got a good review except for Heatseekers. You didn't say which game he already got.

Just go to http://wii.ign.com/index/reviews.html and select "Flight Action" and "Flight Simulation" for the genres to see a list.

FYI, Mini-Copter just has you controlling RC helicopters. I was drawn to the cover art and thought I might be flying the helicopters, you just get to control little toy ones.

I guess the question is; Is it fun?
I don't think he would mind the simplicity, if it is entertaining.

Oh sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I had played it. I actually didn't buy it cuz I was looking to fly actual helicopters or planes - not toys.

And by "actual" I mean "video game simulations" LOL!

I have a feeling we'll never see a true "flight sim" for the Wii. I doubt there'd be enough of a market. The geeky people who are into Flight Simulator, FlightGear, X-Plane et al are a pretty small market to begin with, let alone those who might be up for playing it on the Wii and losing the myriad of controls. It'd be hard to point-and-click the screen in a manner fast enough to simulate working the tons of controls in the same way having a keyboard would. Although I suppose they could make using a USB keyboard a requirement... that wouldn't be so bad.

On that note... here's info from a guy who linked a Wii remote to his Linux box and wrote a driver to use it to play FlightGear. But to be clear: he's playing FG on his Linux computer, not a Wii. He's simply using the Wii Remote.

I don't think I need a Flight Simulator game per se, but just a flying game that would be enjoyable and let him rewind after work.

I believe he has Wing Island, I sent a message to my sister to find out which game he does have.

I bought Blazing Angels : Squadrons of WWII, it is a bargain priced game now. It's not too bad for 20 bucks. The motion controls are pretty well mapped out, but they can be a bit of a fuss. You can use other control schemes if the motion control is too frustrating (which it can be, I fly rc planes so the controls aren't foreign to me, but the motion control isn't as tight as I'd like). It can be a frustrating game as far as the missions go too, quite a few time limits, so it takes a few runs to get past some levels in the time allotted. If your brother-in-law likes wartime planes, and blowing stuff up and shooting down other planes, it wouldn't be a bad choice to pick it up for the price, but if he's looking to just relax with a flying game I wouldn't recommend it.

I have Heatseeker and Wing Island, and I'm not overjoyed with either. They're decent, but not top notch games. Then again I'm not into flying that much. The greatest simulation flying game I've ever played was Sky Odyssey on the PS2, and since he has a PS2 that might be something to look into. Hope you find this helpful in someway.

I didn't say anything about a PS2.

True the original poster didn't find this helpful, but I did! Thanks for the tip, I'm going to get my dad a used copy immediately!

That Wii Motor Sports Airplane that LoganSix posted the link for looks promising. But it's not expected until Dec. 2009
