GameCube games require a GameCube Controller to play.

Classic games can be played with either the GameCube, or the Classic Controllers. Though a few games may be unplayable with the GameCube controller. Before you purchase a Classic game, it should tell you what controllers it supports.

Hope that helps.

and also, he doesn't HAVE to get a wavebird =] although it does defeat the purpose of a wireless system if he doesn't have one =]
