Wii questions (re: Component, Straps)

I recently purchased a Wii and had a few questions:

a) I have the Component Cables- on the GameCube, I had to hold 'B' while booting up so it would enable Progressive Scan, do I have to do something similar on the Wii?

b) The straps on my Wii Remotes, how can I tell if they are the original weak ones or the new ones that they've fixed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
