Wiiremote Doesn't Want to Work

Its not displaying an arrow on the screen when I move it.
When I press the buttons all that happens is the four blue ligths at the bootom of the controller light up and flash.

I've checked everything is connected and the batteries are fine I can't work out whats wrong or what to do.

switch the console off by the plug switch then it will work mine has done this before

remember to use the red sync buttons.

open the SD flap/slot on the wii itself, then press the red button, and also the red button under the battery compartment cover on the remote.
