Yes, to my knowledge any mod chips are illegal, and will void your warranty.

They could make an update that makes the Wii not work with your mod chip any more. Pretty much causing your Wii to become an expensive paper weight... |

basically any kind of chip that will change your system to do different things.
ie. play burned games, play dvds, and more...
