What is this mysterious audio in these people at Engadget.com talking about? Could it be a Mic? Could it be VOIP?

They were talking about it a year and a half ago, going by the date on that article.
I am pretty sure it has been verified that there is a microphone in the remote. There is no use for it yet, though.

From what I remember, it isn't a microphone. Or even if it is able to sense audio, it would not be sophisticated enough to be used as a microphone.

And a microphone on the remote would NOT be an ideal location!

I made on article on this on WiiLoaded. I even contacted Nintendo about it for my research. I concluded that there is an Audio Translation chip in the remote but no input device i.e. Microphone.

They could just enable the use of any bluetooth headset (just like the PS3 does).
