Where I live, broadband is still a pipe dream that I drool about from time to time so, WiFi is a no go. My question, is there a way to update the firmware without WiFi? As in, could I possibly download a patch on my work pc, put it on a SD card, take it home and do the update there?

Nintendo usually puts the latest firmware on their game releases and it installs when you play the game the first time. That's the only alternate way of getting firmware updates if you don't have an internet connection for your Wii.

Take it to someone else's house with Wifi just once, long enough to do an update?

It's a thought, we have WiFi where I work at. As for where I live? The sticks, land of no broadband
