wii-gamecube compatibility

I bought a Gamecube game for my Wii and the classic controller. I can only get as far as the screen that says "there is no memory card, would you like to continue without saving your progress". Is there something wrong or do I just need a Gamecube controller?

You need a gamecube controller, theres no way around it.

Ok thanks. Is a memory card necessary to save my games? Or can I save them to the Wii?
