I would have to place my Wii system away from my television so I would not be facing the Wii, would I still be able to face my television and have the Wii operate properly?

There is a small sensor bar you put underneath or above of your TV......
The actual Wii dosen't pick up the motion directly.Above is a picture the sensor bar....

Because some tv's are larger than normal and/or are on stands that don't have much room for systems etc.

yes you can have it away from your tv but you have to keep it close enough so that you can put the cables into the back of your tv

get a wireless sensor bar if its to far, google "wii wireless sensor bar"
