I would think that if I copy a "saved" game from my Wii memory to my sd card, I should be able to copy that same saved game back to my wii and be able to play the game from where I had last left off.
This weekend I copied a "file" from the Wii memory to an SD card, erased the memory file, then copied the SD file back to Wii memory. The program did not have the save data.

Can you clarify what game you copied to the SD card? If it is a VC game, it's not possible to save 'states', ie. the only way to start from where you left off is to press the blue Home button on the Wiimote and exit to the main menu. You can't really save a game state for the VC games. When you backup a VC game, it only saves the game ROM and some encryption data, thats all.
