Please Help With Controller

Hey guys I just got my son super mario world and we are using the gamecube controller to play it.. I have serached high and low to figure out how to change the controller config for it The gamecube controller default settings are horrible for super mario world. You cannot run and use the normal jump without alot of hard work He is only 7 and he is having to use 2 fingers to run and jump instead of just his thumb. So if there is a way I can set my controls on my gamecube somehow please let me know. Thank you very much

By the way, I did search the forums trying to find this answer for about an hour but I got fedup

you cannot change the controlls, but if you buy the Classic Controller, it will work just like the SNES controller did. $20 US.
