well if you wanna be technical, youre 480p 27 inch tv is considered an edtv. i think the thing you really have to think about is if youre willing to spend a few couple bucks to get a bit of improvement on the wii's graphics. it's not gonna be that drastic but the details on the graphics will be a little sharper and the colors better.

480p is not HD on any size TV.
It's SDTV, or, to be technical, EDTV, or "enhanced definition."
Basically the middle ground between SDTV and HDTV.
And yes, the component cable is worth it. You'll see a big difference in some games. Namely Mario Galaxy, Brawl, and, as I've noticed, Resident Evil 4.
However, I've found that Prince of Persia and NFS Carbon still look pretty "composite-y."
And of course, if you don't own an HDTV, don't bother with the component cable, because only HDTVs support progressive scan.

That gamespot link is great. Good comparisons.
The component cable really does make some games look a lot more crisp. The Zelda screenshots are great evidence.

Yea I only knew my TV was an HDTV because it says it clearly on the front of it. Under it is 1080i. Not sure what that means, I just know my TV is HD.

A 1080i HDTV means it can display resolutions:
-480i
-480p
-720i
-720p
-1080i
But not 1080p.
In other words, Wii should look pretty damn good on it.

Wii only uses 480i by default, though...
Doesn't that mean his/her TV is COMPATIBLE with 1080i?

before anyone goes off buying one, you may want to check out this review of a generic wii component cable: http://www.expotv.com/Nintendo-Wii-C...able-f/35-18XR
he says his $6 generic cable is THE SAME as his nintendo-brand, $30 cable!!!

The Wii uses 480i with composite cables, but it uses 480p with component cables.

No he doesn't.
He says they look exactly the same. But obviously one cost $24 less.

Why do people ask these questions without reading the 50000 other threads about it? The answers are always the same.
- component > s-video > composite
- How much improvement you see depends on the size of your TV. The bigger the TV, the more-noticeable the improvement
- 480p is not "high-def". However, most people haven't ever owned anything that could display 480p until they got an HDTV.
- A screenshot won't really show the difference between 480p and 480i as it has to do with motion. You really have to see it.
- Component cables are cheap. Just pick up some 3rd-party ones and be done with it.

Disagreed.
Seeing as computer monitors (both CRT and LCD) are progressive-scan, looking at a screenshot of another progressive-scan image, versus one of an interlaced image, you will notice a difference.
It isn't just about motion.

Do you understand the difference between interlaced and progressive-scan?
Unless there is motion, you cannot see the difference in a screenshot. There has to be motion in order to capture a screenshot which demonstrates interlacing, in order to catch the lines not in-sync and thereby giving you a "jagged edge".
A still frame will show "flicker" if viewed in-person but this flicker is not perceivable from a screenshot.

Interlaced sucks. You can get cheap cables from Amazon or Monoprice.
