wow, you guys are absolutely freakin hilarious... repeating the same joke that has already been done like 30 times already, even with someone else saying that. and btw, I've HAD a DVD player, if any of you bothered to read some of the previous posts in this thread, the main reason was to decrease the amount of clutter/cords, in addition to the Wii having internet browsing and SD card slots and a "remote", it doesn't seem that odd to have assumed that the Wii might of came with a DVD player (besides the fact that it CAN be used for a DVD player and does have DVD functionality has already been established). So to you original wisecracks, no one expects the Wii to flush toilets or plug into a sock, expecting DVD functionality is perfectly normal, can't we just shut up about this now?

i don't think the wii will be able to play a dvd because if soo then they'll have to remake the system and not have some download(even if that was possiable then the dvd player has to be already in the system)
kinda disappointing about that the wii won't play a dvd player, though.

all you need are the colors slots on the t.v.(red, white and yellow)

ok thanks. But do you need a 60Hz tv like with some games on the xbox 360, or is 50Hz enough?

Hey I was told that Nintendo made the wii specifically for gaming and did not want to keep up with the other two units. Think about this, If nintendo put a dvd/cd play on this unit you would use it for other things than playing games. How is that making them money after your purchase? Its not. So by them only allowing the systems to play games that all you will do with the unit. when you get tired of the games, you buy new ones. They make money. That was told to me by a nintendo rep in the Atl area.

The Wii works on either 480p or 586i with PAL tuners, and the 586i does support 4:3 and 16:9 ratios, which are the two ratios the Wii works on.
and 50Hz is the freq for 586i, so there is no problem there.

Nintendo have stated that they are working on a wii with DVD playback but it has only been confirmed for Japan at the moment. They also said that the issue cannot simply be fixed with a firmware update and some software so it is unlikely that the existing wiis will be able to play DVDs.

^^ link to "hack" that proves that the wii is capable of dvd playback, you morons. 10 pages of useless nonsense and not one answer.
to spell it out... if someone can "soft hack" the wii to play dvds... (meaning they didn't install any hardware such as mod chips) the wii is capable out-of-the-box of playing dvd's. whether nintendo has enabled it at all.
problem being nintendo not caring AT ALL about what their users want.
oh, and sorry if this brought up a dead post to you regular forum goers, but i caught this on a google search and couldn't believe how ignorant it was that not a single person could provide any actual information or at least be encouraging instead of trolling or flaming.
here's an extra link for redundancy, and a direct link to the website:

There's almost nothing more humerous than someone calling other posters trolls then, in the same post, calls others 'morons.' A troll calling others trolls. LOL!

Isn't that the Panasonic Q ... oh yeah, that was the GameCube's attempt to get DVD playback ... too bad it was a failure.

Why do you guys want to play a DVD on your Wii when you can literally can DVD players for 20 bucks? Those cheap Apex and whatever brands usually dont boher with region coding so it is already hacked.
I guess I dont understand the need for the Wii to play a DVD. I have an oven at the house and it can make toast but I prefer to use the toaster.

Who gives a rats ass what the 360 can play. You guys do know you can buy a Blu Ray cheaper than buying a PS3 these days right.
When I first got a Sony PS2, I bought an addon that was a remote for playing DVDs. I had the PS2 hooked up to a Sony brand TV. Everytime a DVD movie would fade to black, the TV would go into sleep mode. There was no way to turn it off. I also tried using my earlier IPAQ as a GPS. You know what -- It sucked.
My point is that I like devices that are designed just for one thing. A Garmain GPS works better than any software addon to your cell phone or smart phone. I am just saying that when a device is $20, wouldnt you rather go that route. Why take life away from your Wii by playing movies on it? The Wii is a $250 device. Buy a cheap DVD player and be happy with it. If it breaks, you are out $20.
