I think people just enjoy arguing. And your speech amused me Yupiw lol. I think I'm just really angry that my TV has a video input 1 and 2 channel but I don't seem to actually have a Video 1 channel, just Video 2. And because of this, I have to change the plugs everytime I want to go from using the Wii to DVD player and vice versa. It's just a bit of a hassle. I remember when I had my Playstation 2, I just used it to play games as well as watching DVDs. I figured any system that supported a CD-like disc could play audio CDs as well as DVDs as it was common in older systems. I'm not really an expert on computers and video games and stuff so I just assumed since it was kind of a trend. It's like buying a phone today and it doesn't come with a camera. You may not have purchased the phone just for it's camera, but it's still nice to have, and I don't even think there are many phones out there that don't even have a decent camera. i just got a new LG Shine. It's pretty.
On the other hand, I am glad my Wii lets me check the weather.

Ok so we all agree the Wii is capable of running DVDs but the feature is just disabled? Why is that? Do you think they will allow you to purchase the option to unlock that feature in the future?

Doubt they'll unlock it(if it's true). the Wii reads DVD's backwards as a way to make it harder to pirate games (didn't really work too well) and something about it being cheaper. If they flash the DVD firmware to make it flip-flop between directions, there's a good chance that some Wii's might stop reading discs altogether(cause doing things like that can be unreliable, sometimes) and i don't think Nintendo would gain much out of it, like so many people have said before. BUT, what I'm hoping for is some sort of video/audio streaming channel that you can get off of the shopping channel. That way you can just rip DVDs/CDs on your computer and stream them to your Wii. I know there are already programs that do that(which give bad quality video), and that there is little chance of Nintendo making somehing like this, but it seems like a good idea. And if Nintendo doesn't do it, I got a modchip so I'll get some sort of homebrew app when one comes out.

You bring a really good point..
besides, I think it would make sense that the Wii would have a DVD function, their software are called "Channels" and their Wii controller is known as a Wiimote, as in Remote.. They make it sound like it can play DVDs or have some kind of TV function to it(I have heard rumors of recording TV shows or something like that, I didnt get all the details)
And the extra space, and wire space... would be REALLY nice
I think its cool that it can connect to the internet wirelessly
Hmm
Its not a bad thing that it does can't play DVDs
I bought it to play games, not to watch movies
Although it would be nice ^_^

A modification chip or modchip is a device used to play import discs, backup dvd-r/ dvd-rw, or homebrew game roms and/or circumvent the digital rights management of many game consoles, including the Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Wii. Almost all modern console gaming systems have hardware-based schemes which ensure that only officially sanctioned games (whose producers pay licensing fees) may be used with the system and implement country and regional lockout similar to the scheme used in DVD movies. The specific technical nature of these DRM systems varies by system, and may include cryptographic signing (Xbox), intentionally unreadable sectors (PlayStation), custom optical media (Nintendo Wii, Dreamcast), or some combination thereof. Modchips are available also for some DVD players and PSP PlayStation Portable, to defeat region code enforcement and user operation prohibitions.
Get this chip and download a bit torrent and get utorrent then you can also burn games onto a regular dvdr and play them on your wii. any other questions shoot me a pm

false belief ... proven already that a mod chip enables the wii to play DVD movies

Does any of the Nintendo consoles play DVD's or CD's? - No.
Nintendo have been one of the biggest Computer Gaming companies in the Industry. Why? Because they spend their money on their GAMING.
As people have already said, Playstation's and Xbox's etc cost ALOT more than the Wii, because they will have to pay a licensing fee for every product made to play a dvd, and because they are concentrating more on their Graphics and the ability to make the "Best all in one combo" possible.
It's easy to say that all Nintendo want to do is make money...but compared to Sony and Microsoft, they actually think about what we want to enjoy from a games console instead of thinking about everything they can include in a console to make it gain more profit.
I am a huge gamer and Nintendo's products have always made me enjoy myself. I am one of the ones that prefer gameplay far more than Graphics. Yes, nicer graphics are a plus side but if the game is enjoyable and fun with basic graphics (Like Mario Kart Wii for instance) then that's really all that matters to me.
That's one reason I don't really want a PSP or a PS3 / Xbox. The Wii has more variety of games where as PS3 / Xbox mainly concentrates on having the best graphics for war, racing or combat games. (I play games like that but I like having more variety). Not to mention the PSP is more of a portable media player than a gaming system.
So yeah - Conclusion - Nintendo Wii does not need DVD's or CD's to make it enjoyable. It's cheaper than other consoles for a reason. Nintendo knew that the newer consoles would end up being far more expensive so concentrated on something more enjoyable for a cheap price.
That's my thought anyway.

Hmm, considering his post here is accurate, what's not nice about it? This thread should have died off. Your post, however, with its jabs at {Axtlár} could be considered 'not nice' I suppose.

(cannot be stuffed reading whole thread)
I remember hearing somewhere Nintendo intend on making a DVD playing Wii, but not a basic system update can allow it (they say), but that's all I know
