I thought this thread died a week ago. @-@
Still, I own both a Dvd player and Cd/mp3 player buttt, one shows movies poorly, ones broken and the other got confiscated. My fault for not buying a few adapters but I dont wanna rewire systems, the tv and the vhs just to do 1 thing for a few hours.
Of course Nintendo isnt gonna add in those functions but, it'd be sweet if it had a kind of audiosurf so you could hear songs/cds while you play. (sd card no?) Or hell... we have the internet channel, <3 you could watch bootleg but no, it doesnt supprt some stuff so you cant watch NG because of flash or something rite? poo . (wait thats something else)
dhhu4rdf43dujhg that took forever with the wiimote™

Couldn't they just make Wii specific DVDs? Like how they have PSP DVDs.

Tell whizkers not to knock over ur Wii like he did your PS2. =0)

Precisely. So go out and buy a DVD player, and then you'll be able to watch DVDs. Problem solved.
Let's just remember that the Wii was mainly designed for playing Wii games on.

Thats so basic. Saying all that other stuff is going overboard and doesn't even relate. If my PS2 can play CDs/DVDs... I just feel like it should be a feature that was implemented with the console and I have no idea why you guys are being assholes about it.

Nintendo didn't even expect the wii to take off. it expected the wii to tank. so why would they have included that functionality when they assumed it was destined for failure? and yes this is true, because why do you think nintendo couldnt meet demand? they didnt produce much b/c they thought it would fail. i say expect a wiiVD around 09, when wiis are actually on shelves.

This is ridiculous. They used a similar strategy with the Wii that they did with the DS and expected similar successful results. And the Wii was in short supply, not because they made a small number of them, but because the demand was far far higher than they expected. They were making more Wiis from the start than the 360 or PS3. And production has increased a lot since launch to try and keep up with the higher than expected demand. Was the Wii a big gamble that could have failed miserably? Sure. But they did everything they could in advance to make it a success.

Making a wii play dvd's is like turning your ds into a mp3 player.
May seem useful, but totally unnecessary.

Ok, I didn't look through all 8 pages, just the first and the last, but I saw a lot of spam especially across the first page, so I'll give you the facts.
The Wii disc are in fact DVDs, the Wii optical drive is a DVD drive, now the reason it can't automatically read movie DVDs and music CDs is because the Wii wasn't programmed with the drivers to play them. Yes it is possible to allow the Wii to do so with a Firmware update and a DVD/CD Player Wii-Ware Channel, but Nintendo more than likely will never do it, just because they didn't do so to begin with. The reason Nintendo didn't do this is because they felt it was unecessary, why does the Wii need to play DVDs and CDs when most people already have these devices? To be clear, it wasn't worth the cost to pay the licensing fees in order to allow the Wii to play these formats.
Now it wouldn't be terrible if Nintendo would release these features, it defiantly would be useless. It would be sorta like the Opera Channel, just a nice extra. But with the DVD and CD channels, they could mix it up. DVD controls with the motion sensor could be extremely fluid and well done, especially if they included an easy slider bar to scan the movie. Also like on the computer with the mouse, you could easily point and click on the menus. As for the CD channel they could make a mixer channel, which could work with MP3s as well, where you could extract the songs and play around with them, make them play backwards, turntable them, etc. It would be like the photo channel, but for your music.
Also, for those saying, why don't you just go out and buy a cheap DVD/CD player, that's just another box to full up more space. The Wii is only the size of a few DVD cases, you don't get much compact than that, and if you could combine your games, music, and movies in one small package, congratulations you just saved a bunch of space, controllers, and wires.

And I did turn my DS into a MP3 player, but I don't use it for that, I got my PSP for my MP3s.

That's exactly my reasoning. The Wii could be completely capable of playing DVDs and it's just extra mess and space. I also am too lazy to buy one of those input switch boxes so I end up switching the cables anyways when I want to watch a DVD in my DVD player. Would be much more convenient to have it all in one box.

The fact that people using modchips are able to do so, just by adding the codecs, no hardware modifications to get it to work. Like I said, the Wii optical drive is a DVD reader, so it most certainly can read DVDs
