Wii - DVD compatible?
It really annoys me that the Wii can't play DVDs although I think it can. Do you think Nintendo is planning to make this a feature you can purchase online? If so... it's kinda lame, considering all the other consoles don't require you to pay extra to use it as a DVD player.

The other consoles also cost anywhere between 100 to 300 dollars more...

My Playstation 2 can play a DVD. DVD players cost like $30 these days. If it can play dual layered DVDs, why can't it play regular DVDs? It just doesn't make sense.

And get this B.S! I put a PS3 disc in it and the Wii wouldn't read it. WTF is this world coming to? If I buy a video game console, it better take and kind of media I want. Even if I were to dust off some of my vinyl LPs, the bastard better work.

Yeah, WTF? I've tried a 5.25" floppy disc, a Laserdisc, and an 8-track tape, and NONE will play on my Wii! I'm bitter...

You are an idiot. What in the world would make you think that the Wii would play a PS3 game... Just because it fits?
Honestly, the comments and posts are getting more stupid every day...

Does anyone know where the RS-232 port is so I can hook up my serial dongle to run my CAD programs? And how on earth are my floppy disks supposed to fit into that tiny "SD" slot on the front? (I guess High Density wasn't good enough for them. They had to go Super Density.)

If only there were other cheap devices already on the market and in many US consumer's homes that could play DVD's. Shrewd Nintendo, very shrewd.

If only people would have the intellectual ability to learn to buy DVD players to play DVD discs on.

I don't understand why you guys are trolling. The other systems can play a DVD, is that too much to ask for? Yes, I have a DvD player and a CD player, but since you guys want to put it that way, why don't we have seperate TVs for watching TV and ones made for gaming? Why can't the Wii play DVDs or CDs? Thats so basic. Saying all that other stuff is going overboard and doesn't even relate. If my PS2 can play CDs/DVDs... I just feel like it should be a feature that was implemented with the console and I have no idea why you guys are being assholes about it.

The Wii might technically be able to play DVDs. My DVD player likewise has the power to read Wii discs and play their audio soundtracks. My GPS has the horsepower to be a web browser. However none was advertised as being able to do as much.
If you need a DVD player so badly, go and spend the $30 to get a DVD player. They are as small as the Wii these days and come with a remote with all the buttons you'd be expecting on a DVD remote.

Poor analogy on the TVs, TV is essentially a fixed type, whereas game systems can have proprietary data formats, regardless of the media type.
The Wii is cheaper than those other consoles, and to keep the price down, they had to leave some things out that other consoles had, IMO...

If the medium the Wii used for storing game data were a proper DVD, I think you'd have a valid point. However, that's not the case. There are many similarities between the Wii's game disc format and a DVD but they are different. I can see why Nintendo didn't bother to cater to both disc types when DVD players are already so abundant.

I think the main reason everyone was joking around, was because this is an issue that has been exhausted. Also, since Nintendo has said from the beginning that the Wii won't play DVDs, it's a moot point. Being such, the members of this board were using sarcastic humor to point out that Nintendo has taken the stance that Video Game consoles should stick to what they do best. They really weren't making fun of you esoterika.
edit: I forgot some things
Also, good point hal2814. I believe your right, but I'm not 100% sure. Another reason is that the Wii already has an atrociously small amount of memory anyways, lest it be bogged down by an inferior DVD player.
