EDIT:The problem I had has been solved, on my last post below, I have explained what happened and why, in case anybody is having a similar problem and need orientation in wiimotes, etc. Thanks all!

Hello, I am new to these forums. If I had known these forums existed, i would have joined much earlier. And well, here is my incentive to join:

So my wife finished playing sims 2 pets last night, and turned the wii off through the remote like we usually do. Then, when she try to play today, first the usual black screen that asks you to press "A" appears, and so we did, so far so good. Then, there is no pointer, at all. Nowhere to be seen. It just is not there. The home key works, I press it and the home screen comes up, and then I press it again, and it exits it, as it should. However, even in the home screen, there is still not cursor/pointer. I tried cleaning the wii motes and sensor bar using LCD wipes. I checked the conneciton in the back. I stood anywhere from 17 feet to 1 foot from the sensor, and still no pointer. It is like the sensor is detecting the wiimotes (I tried 3 different wii motes) but not the cursor? What in the world is going on? Can somebody please help me?

If your using a wireless sensor bar then it probably ran out of batteries if not i would check if the ir leds are working by using a camera.

THank you all for your reply. However, strangely enough, youtube solved my problem. I came across a couple of videos of people who explained that it is possible to substitute the sensor bar by using lit candles or any other 2 sources of lights placed accordingly to your screen. Basically, my sensor bar is dead. First thing I did, purchase one on ebay, already done. Second thing I did, I set two bedside lamps on each side of the tv on the floor, and now my wife is happily playing sims again while the sensor bar gets here. It is pretty funny to see her play with two gigantic bright a** lights on each side though..lol. Thanks again

I had a similar problem when I bought and tried to sync a second Wiimote to my Wii.

The pointer was COMPLETELY off-target. So much so that I couldn't even see it unless I practically pointed the Wiimote at my ceiling, THEN it would appear on screen. Extremely weird.

I solved it by reconnecting both Wiimotes using the Home button menu, then clicking the Wiimote, then doing the "Reconnect" thing for both Wiimotes.

Well in my case, what you did was not possible because no matter where I stood or pointed they would not appear on screen. However, as I already indicated in post previous to this one, the wii sensor bar is nothing but a tiny little box looking thing with infrared LED lights in it. In reality, it is not a sensor bar in any way, because it does not have any sensors. The Wiimote is both an infrared camera with buttons and a 2.54Ghz device. Basically, the infrared camera depends on a fixed source of light (well actually, two sources of light aligned with each other) to figure out where the current user is actually pointing. The infrared camera uses the fixed sources of light as a reference point to decipher what is left, what is right, what is up, what is down, what is close, what is far, etc. The remote combines this information with whatever the user is pressing on it (buttons) and sends this information to the wii through the 2.54Ghz channel. Now, Nintendo made the "sensor bar" infrared LEDs specifically because that way the lights will not be perceivable to the human eye. However, it is entirely possible to replace the "sensor bar" with any other 2 sources of light (i.e. two lamps, two candles, to christmas LEDs, etc) So, possibly, when the person in the post above me pointed at the ceiling, there is a strong possibility he pointed at a ceiling lamp or something similar and therefore the wiimote founds its much needed sources of light and thus the pointer appeared on screen.

This being the wii forums, I am sure there are a lot of people who know all of the above. However, I also believe there a lot of people who do not (I recently learned this myself) and I typed all of the above so that if anybody has related problems with their wiimote, they will know alternatives and understand what can be wrong with it. Also, it is important to note that the wiimote has the capability of sending the signals of buttons being pressed on the wiimote without a source of light. However, all that you can pretty much do without a source of light is press "A" at the initial screen and press the home menu key while in the wii home screen. So just because you are able to press home menu screen and yet your pointer is not appearing, it does not mean your sensor bar is kinda still working, it actually means the opposite. As somebody pointed above, if you see the sensor bar through a camera you will be able to see the lights (infrared is invisible to the human eye but not to cameras). If they are not on even though the wii is on and the sensor bar is plugged in correctly, then you got yourself a nonworking bar and need to replace it (which was my case). I hope all of this is helpful for some people. Thank you all for your input

That was probably the best decription of how the wiimote and sensor bar work that I've ever read. Thanks, dark.
