I would be completely satisfied if:
Nintendo released a USB flash drive that allowed the internal memory to be expanded to the drive, so games could be loaded and save directly to the flash drive, so I can take my saves to friends' Wii without having to shuffle the saved games around. Since they already lock down the VC games to your console, it would be great if you could also load directly from that same drive. I can assure you that it is a simple fix in the Wii OS - a 2 GB stick compared to 512 fixed internal sounds so appealing. The same could be applied for the SD slot.

I think we should cut the OP a break. This is a huge problem with the Wii. It would be so simple to make where a USB hard drive/thumb drive or the SD Cards work with it. This would solve the problems. I know Nintendo has concerns about piracy by allowing people to copy their virtual console and wii ware games to another storage medium but Nintendo has forced the issue with the new original Wiiware titles. Every week when new VC and WiiWare games come out, this is going to be a bigger problem.

I actually find it unbelievable that Nintendo does not already have a solution before presenting the new WiiWare. It is not like this wasn't already an issue for people who liked the VC games. The bigger WiiWare games are going to force Nintendo to do something.

yeah they'll have no choice. i just hope they don't equip proprietary usb drives with that new NSA approved, self-encrypting, hard drive from seagate.
might cost us a fortune. :/

This will be interesting to see how this works out. If Nintendo only sells a proprietary drive, how will the hardcore games with Wii's react.

You can get a simpletech 320GB usb drive for 120 bucks on NewEgg or similar sites. I believe a single drive would solve the problem.

If it is proprietary then it needs to be at lest 120GB for under $100 to be fesable for most Wii gamers IMO.

Why the hell would you need 120 GB? All of the VC and Wiiware games wouldn't even take up 10 GB.

The price is cheap on those drives and if HD support is added then I would expect to see more publishers make more data stored directly on the HD as well as the WiiWare games get bigger. It also might mean being able to load games from the Disc right to the hard drive so you dont have to put in the game disc each time you want to play a game.

Also, it might be nice to be able to play Video and Audio from the drive which could easily be done when Nintendo comes up with a storage solution.

At this point, I would be content with just aallowing the data to be saved directly to SD cards. 2GB SDcards are 9.99 + 2.00 shipping on ebay.

For those who have the money, hard drives are great. But if you're like me, you don't have enough money to buy a hard drive to store media files that are already on your computer, so there would be no need for a hard drive. A simple firmware update would solve the issue of storage by incorporating an SD card as an extension to the Wii's internal memory.

I can live with the SDCards working as memory especially since you can easily have multiple cards.

Isnt the Wii limited to 2GB SDcards though? I thought I read it cannot handle the 4GB and above cards.

The SDCard option would be the quick fix. I still think the external hard drive option would be the ideal solution as long as they support SD cards also.

The Wii can only read standard SD cards - SD high capacity cards are anything over 2GB, so that is correct. But the 2GB card can store massive amounts of data pertaining to WiiWare, VC games, and game saves. I would be willing to see Nintendo get a USB flash drive of various capacities, up to 8GB or so.

A firmware update could also allow for SDHC support, removing the 2GB limit.

But yes, laserbeak: the SD memory is not merged with main memory. It simply becomes a "backup" device you can shuttle VC downloads and some save game files to. It's really a pain in the arse though.

The scary thought is that Nintendo could release a proprietary 4GB or 8GB hard drive and charge $140 for it even though you can get uSB cards or SD cards for under 20 bucks.

If Nintendo makes a proprietary HD then it should have a lot of disk space as disk space is cheap.
