Wii Remote and Balance Board Issues

I had my Wii for about two months, and my Wii Fit for about a month. When I try to do the free step with my Wii fit, the volumn on my controller isn't working right. It goes in and out at times. Now the problem with the balance board is, while I am doing the same exercise, the balance board won't count any of my steps for several minutes. It's like the balance board just shuts off, then turns back on. I had never had this problem before, and am desperately seeking advice.

I just wanted to add that I had changed the batteries in both the remote and balance board.
