We're having a weird issue with our Wii.... we're getting some kind of interference or something showing up when we play games. It only happens with gameplay... not with any of the channels or Miis.
Looks like a bad connection, make sure the wires are tight and clean on both ends for your A/V cables. Worse comes to worse its a short in the input ont he t.v. if you have more than one try another source. If not just try the upgraded cables for component instead of the stock composite cables.
MANGGG! Got Summer Hatin On Me Cause I'm Hotter Then The Sun Got Spring Hatin On Me Cause I Aint Neva Sprung Winterrr Hatin On Me Cause Im Colder Then Yall & I Will Never, I Will Never, I Will Never Fall I'm Being Hated On By The Seasons, So F*** Yall, Hatin For No Reason!
Yeah I'm thinking it's the lens or some problem reading discs. The menus run in firmware...no disc access. Games run from disc. It just seems weird that you don't also get crashes or pauses too...just screen crap.
Sorry if maybe I'm not looking at the right problem, but why would a dirty lens cause graphical anomalies on the screen? The discs are digital, either it can read and load a file on the disc or it can't and the game will fail or crash.
If that video is accurate, I'd say you probably have a bad Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and you'll have to send your Wii in for repair.
grab a lens cleaner CD - it has a few tiny bristles on the CD face. It has worked with my CD players in cars but I have yet to try it with a game system. Anywhere from the local Walgreens to Best Buy should have one. It could be a bad lens head altogether, which would not be so cool.

Anyone have any ideas what's causing it? Or how to fix it?
I Just went through this issue. Nintendo tech. They said it "could" be a problem with a graphics component but it is still a warranty issue, to get it fixed you still have to be in warranty. Than they would also just send you a refurb. Mine had the same issues in game and also on the Wii Menu. Pixelated grid dirt.We went through the 20 questions game and landed on graphics card.
My unit was purchased in February 07 to date in comparison with the Unit you have.
I had a replacement plan so I just took it back to the retailer and got a brand spanking new unit. IT beats waiting and getting a refurb back from Nintendo. I do have to add that the customer service rep from Nintendo was really good and helpful, a plus to know if something goes wrong. I would have sent it to Nintendo because i STILL HAVE 5 MONTHS ON MY REPLACEMENT PLAN. The kicker is that the unit that Nintendo would send back would have a different serial number and void my replacement plan. The plan cost me 50.00 at point of sale.
Retailer said that the one I got is also a newer model,They had to do extra paperwork and I had to wait in the store.
Good luck on this one I hope you are still in warranty. I use American express also to purchase. It extends the manufacturers warranty an additional year.
hmmm.... we got ours last Nov. We're in NC, and had to have a friend in Portland pick one up for us because you couldn't find them around here. I sen an email in, but I haven't heard back. I'll have to give them a call next week I guess.
I had this same problem... it only gets worse and worse until you see it on even the main wii menu screens and all other games. It starts in the more GPU intense games. Some think this video artifacting problem comes from the GPU being overheated, either by not getting proper air-flow or leaving the Wiiconnect24/Standby wifi on.... but nobody really seems to be sure. Only way to fix it is to send your Wii to nintendo for repair. This is a common problem... google for "wii artifacting" or look it up on youtube. It's a problem LOTS of people have but Nintendo themselves deny as being a problem at all. Their tech support is reluctant to even recognize this problem exists, yet they will let you send it in for repair with no problem and you get back a working Wii. I am using a Wii Intercooler fan from now on to make sure I don't get the problem again.
I keep the apt below 70 all times, because with X360, laptops, and the Wii, its better to have the ambient temp. low ...

Yes I now leave Wii connect 24 off, I got the "grids" after discovering that my son turned on the deck and it was left on for a couple days. When I found it it was warm. I turned on the TV to take a look and I had very faint noise on the menu and in game.
