I think we all realize that their will be a storage device coming for the Wii as the people downloading VC and Wiiware games can run out in a hurry.
Instead of complaining about not having it, I wanted to get views of what people think the extra memory capacity device will be.
I believe it wiill be one of the below:
1. SD Card allows direct saves of game data and channels.
2. Propietary card that goes into the SD Card slot.
3. Support for regular USB hard Drives
4. Proprietary Hard Drive b
5. Standard Flash Drive
6. Proprietary flash drive.
My bet is Nintendo goes with a proprietary flash drive and sell ist for 60 bucks. I would prefer standard SD card to be a virtual expansion of system memory. I would be thrilled with any solution that is not proprietary but I know it will be.

I personally don't want to feel obliged to buy another 'device', so I also would opt for direct access to the SD card and possibly support for larger sizes of SD card if that's flashable as well.

I have a 2 Gig flash drive that I don't really use, so Ima go with the flash drive support.

that is perfect
im sure every1 would be happy with that
i know i would be
if only i could make my own channels
but nintendo will probably rig the wii so it has to be specifically a nintendo sd card to run channels off the card

I'm assuming the current Wii isn't capable of using SDHC, even with a firmware update.

I'd prefer SDHC compatibility as the solution. It's not clear if this can be done in firmware or not. As far as I know an SDHC card identifies itself and its size differently than SD. SD-only hosts don't know how to interpret the ID and that's the main problem. The addressing is different too, but I'd think all this could be changed in firmware, but who knows how they designed the memory controller? It seems pretty shortsighted to make it SD only....you always need more memory and storage than you think.

None tbh. I seriously think somehow Nintendo thinks SD cards that we can't save much too is enough.

In this case a proprietary device would be one made by Nintendo that only works with the Wii.
A open device would be like a standard USB drive, Flash Drive, or SDCARD.
A proprietary drive would only work on Nintendo systems ant not on any other systems.
Stnadard storage formats would benefit Wii Owners. Proprietary devices would screw consumers because there would be no other devices to buy other the Nintendo brand which would mean Nintendo could charge whatver they want.
Here is a good example. A simpletech USB hard drive with 320GB Yes 320GB costs 129 currently online. Nintendo could creat an 8GB hard drive and charge the same price.

i dont think they will do any, because then it would allow us to port things onto the memory storage devices. im thinking something like an online server where they would store your things into an account (Free of charge) and then all you do is go to a certain channel and it would log you in, and show you all the things you have bought. then you just click one and load it.
Edit: I didnt know what a Proprietary device was, so i guess i would go with that.

I think they will come out with a new format to make current SD cards Proprietary once formatted on the Wii. Easy everyone already has it available.
Even without SDHC support the standard 2 gig SD will even go a long way on the Wii specially when you cinsider DLC for the Wii compared to the others will be much smaller, specailly with compression software. Only issue might be access speed.
Even so I would rather use the pile of SD cards I have now than to go out and buy something else.

I don't care what they do, as long as it's fixed. Until then, If I run out of space I have 2 SD cards I can use.

How many megabytes/gigabytes are in the Wii's internal memory to begin with anyway?

Where online do you shop?
I can get a 500 GB hard drive for $100, 750 GB for 150 and 1 TB for $200 all from NewEgg, and most of those have free shipping. Those prices include brand names like Western Digital, Seagate, and others.

512 mb is onboard with the Wii. I hope they will bring out a ten gig drive for fifty bucks... but knowing Nintendo they think everything is perfect with their machine

i'm really not expecting them to come out with one. judging by one Q&A with that one nintendo of america guy when the Q was is nintendo planning on making any type of hard drive to solve the memory issue, the prick just said "wii owners have the option to save games or channels onto an SD card or delete a virtual console game or channel and redownload it later for free" and that just convinced me that they don't care how many people complain, they think they are right in every little detail
