Perhaps you should rewrite you question, but I'll give it a shot.
The composite cable, the cord that Wii ships with, does 480i, which is SD picture. The Component cable, a cord which Nintendo sells for about 30 dollars, will allow your wii to show games in 480p(or still 480i), which is ED picture.
Not all games supports 480p, but its fairly common. 480p is a good bit nicer, and for a small amount of money, I'd suggest it.

A few companies make the product, I have the Nintendo's one. They're great.
Here is Nintendo's link from their online store.

I believe you can find 3rd party ones in B&M stores. And yes Mario Kart Wii does 480p.

The only games on Wii that don't have 480p + 16:9 support are crappy little titles made by third parties.

I'm sure there has been plenty of threads about this before.
Here is a nice comparison of composite and component images though:

You can still use your TV to put these in 16:9 mode but it will look stretched.

Are there 3rd party ones? I ask because the nintendo has a proprietary connection on the back. I purchased two sets of component cables. I leave the component cables hooked up in the living room so it is easy to hook the Wii up there if we have company. We usually keep the Wii in the TV room which doesnt work out good when there is company.

Well, there are definitely cables not made by Nintendo.
I bought these and they seem to work well.

eBay is great for cables. They are not the OEM ones but you can buy cell phone cables for $5.99 with shipping that would cost $50 from VZW and other cell companies.
You just made it sound like you could pick up any component cables. I didnt want someone to run out a buy a regular set of component cables.
It would be really nice if the console makers would just have standard connectors but they are too greedy!

Sorry for a late reply.
Monoprice.com is a great place to buy cables of any type. I bought their Wii component cable. $10 shipped to Canada, arrived in 5 days. Looks great, far better picture than the standard cables.
