I don't think they'd mind him telling them that. I figure as long as it's under warranty they'll fix and understand what happened.
When I had my Xbox, about three weeks after Xbox Live came out, my dog got hold of my Mic and shred it to pieces. Well, at that time, there was no stand-alone mic to buy. You could only get it from the starter kit. I called of MS support and told them about what had happened and see if there was a way I could purchase a mic from them. They gave it to me for free.
I've also had them fix my Xbox after it was out of warranty for free... Go figure.
I assume Ninty's support would be about the same.
