When I hit the power button on the remote, it seems to switch off the wii, but eventually the blue light around the cd drive will light up and the only way to stop it is to disconnect the wii from the power supply.

Any idea what I've been doing wrong?

Well that's the problem right there. You are turning off the Wii. Idiot.

Check your messages, a blue light means (?) you have a message waiting. A yellow light (?) means it is connecting to Wi-Fi, Green is... I dunno stand-by?

But yeah a Blue light is perfectly normal.
